Apples and oranges...

Quote:
How is a COLA calculated?

The Social Security Act specifies a formula for determining each COLA. In general, a COLA is equal to the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of one year to the third quarter of the next. If there is no increase, there is no COLA. LINK
There's a reason a formula is used. Do you really wish it to be political? Didn't think so.

And yes, I think the bonuses being paid to taxpayer supported companies are putrid. I said so here months ago that the highest salary of any of their employees should not be higher than the POTUS. "Oh but we'll loose the best people." BS - where they gonna go? Is Wall Street hiring again? Besides what makes them the best??? I guess getting billions out of us does require some smarts so maybe they're right after all.

I understand what you are saying Robert and the COLA information you provided, but wont the teachers, college staff, congressmen, senators, governement employees all get salary increases?

But what of rising gas prices? In Columbus, one school district cu tout all sports this year due to $$$. If they vote in a new levy, that is less money in the pocket of the retired home owner.

I also heard that BHO wanted to give the SSI people a one time bonus of like $250 or so.

Re: no cost of living increase for Social Security retirees

Looks like we will receive a one time $250 payment . . pretty much a cop out in my oopinion, although I'll take it. The COLA calculation has been in effect for years.

The decline in cost of living more than offsets the paltry annual increase. (Other than the tax inncreases we will be seeing to pay down the Bush deficiet)

Teachers, college staff, government employees...all may see stagnant wages. Some have faced mandatory furlows which is the same as a cut in pay. Members of Congress, cut in pay??? Do you even have to ask???

I don't know about the others but some federal government workers get "locality pay" which is a bump to compensate them for living in an area more costly than average - D.C. for example. These are adjusted yearly and I can imagine some will go down this year.

If the Senate wants to vote 60-40 for an increase, they can.

Re: no cost of living increase for Social Security retirees

So you would want them to vote an increase of pay for themselves instead of SS Simp...

wow... or would you be looking for a compromise?

In this case, my conservative views says nothing needs to be done . . I just wish this damn party had the cajones to stand up for something . . instead of sitting on their hands . . but I suspect they will slink back into the shadows, afraid to take a stand. . wait for direction from Limbaugh & Co, then when Dems propose something . . then shout NO.

Just like Health Care Reform . . propose nothing . . shout NO and Never.

LOL. they will give themselves a raise regardless of any other matters on the table, thats one of the few things you can rest assured on; and it wont be influenced by the consumer price index having lowered!

Limbaugh their leader I would rather take a titanic style cruise with Captain Hazelwood at the helm!

as long as Limbaugh is not bound/ gagged and thrown into a closet somewhere the GOP party can be considered "adrift"

He's as far right as the popular left wing hosts are...oh wait, there aren't that many to listen to, because nobody wants to. BUT, the one's that are out there, are just as "out there".
