Russia Resists U.S. Position on Sanctions for Iran
MOSCOW — Denting President Obama’s hopes for a powerful ally in his campaign to press Iran on its nuclear program, Russia’s foreign minister said Tuesday that threatening Tehran now with harsh new sanctions would be “counterproductive.”
The minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, said after meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton here that diplomacy should be given a chance to work, particularly after a meeting in Geneva this month in which the Iranian government said it would allow United Nations inspectors to visit its clandestine nuclear enrichment site near the holy city of Qum. “At the current stage, all forces should be thrown at supporting the negotiating process,” he said. “Threats, sanctions and threats of pressure in the current situation, we are convinced, would be counterproductive.” http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/14/wo....html?_r=1&hpw

Re: Russia Resists U.S. Position on Sanctions for Iran
what a shock; this is the EXACT reason why sanctions never work; there is always one or two of the big 5 that just have too much business at stake to apply real sanctions; so why even bother with this tap dance?

Re: Russia Resists U.S. Position on Sanctions for Iran
We have no bargaining chips in this issue with Russia, because we gave away the farm with the primise not to deploy the defense shield near their territory before we got anything in return.
Big mistake by a rookie and very naive President. Otherwise, we angered our friends and placate Russia again with nothing in return. Go figure.
