Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
(CNN) -- President Barack Obama made history again Friday, winning the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Obama's efforts to solve complex global problems, including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons. "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population," it said. After the president was awakened and told he had won, he said he was humbled to be selected, according to an administration official. http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe...ize/index.html

Re: Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
My initial reaction was: Huh?
Then I thought about it for a few seconds and realized it was as much an anti-Bush award as it was a pro-Obama award; probably more so. They should probably stick to awards for science where it actually means something.

Re: Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
Nothing like awarding someone for something the haven't really done. I had always understood the nobel peace prize to be awarded to someone for a lifetime of achievement. When one considers that he was nominated back in Feb of this year, it's pretty mind blowing. I'm sure there are other humanitarian people in the world that have done more to advance world peace than BHO? I guess in a nationalistic way it's cool that it's an american that received it, but isn't it a bit premature? Kinda like voting a football player to the NFL hall of fame after the first two games of his career. Heck, he doesn't have that much political experience, much less on a global stage such as the nobel peace prize is supposed to recognize.

After awarding Peace Prizes to Kissinger (1973) Arafat (1994) , Gore (2008) who really knows what they value or cares what they do?

HAHAHA best quote of this whole thing...
He’s not only the first post-racial president, he’s also the first post-accomplishment.

Re: Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
Hahaha. I knew you guys would be chomping at the bit at this one. Simp already beat me to the AP (yahoo) link about the myths though. Hmm, hey Simp, you think the republicans would recognize "accomplishment" if Obama hung a premature victory banner? Or is it a case of "fool me once... shame on... shame on you. Fool me- you can't get fooled again!"

Re: Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
Yeah . . you are probably right . . had nothing to do with stories of death panels, that he was not a US Citizen . . that he is a Muslim . . that he is actually a Natzi Socialist ( got to love that one ) . . that Wubbya left him with the largest deficit in history . . which is now being used to argue against Health Care Reform
I agree . . ego . . pure and simple!

Re: Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
Realistically, the Nobel Peace Prize long ago became a purely political statement from the award committee. Certainly, Obama doesn't deserve the award but that's not the point. No one in their right mind would refuse the award, and how the President deals with his windfall could give him serious political leverage. How about if his acceptance speech singled out Iranian dissidents for praise?
On the other hand, you might take the award as a sign of renewed faith in American leadership. Politics is very much about perception, and I think this is a good thing for the nation.

Re: Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
Pres. Obama doesn't deserve it? After the confrontational war-mongering policies of the pretender George W. Bush? After Pres. Obama's game-changing policy of engagement v. confrontation?
Let's face facts: Bush's policies created enemies. Pres. Obama's policies create, if not allies, then at least non-enemies. Who made us safer? And who advanced the cause of peace and freedom? |
