Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed a resolution apologizing to African-Americans for the wrongs of slavery.

The nonbinding resolution sponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, is similar to a House resolution adopted last year that acknowledged the wrongs of slavery but offered no reparations. The House will have to vote on the issue again because the composition of that chamber changed after last November's elections.

The resolution was approved on a voice vote.

Because it is nonbinding, it does not have to be forwarded to the president for his signature.

Several states have passed similar resolutions, but the House resolution was the first time a branch of the federal government did so.

Re: Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery

Wonder how many tax dollars were spent to push this critical resolution
through. What a waste. Its a no brainer, slavery was wrong, get over
it that was many generations ago. How bout a apology for the treatment
of the native americans, chinese americans, japanese americans, white
americans, italians americans, etc..This guy must be clamoring for the
black vote, or he has a guilty conscience or something.
Probably has illegals doing his yard work and cleaning his house and
he feels bad..

Already done - with $20K each in reparations.

Re: Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery

When will the apologies stop? Do we really need our legislators spending their time with this?

I didn't hear anyone complaining about use of time when they were naming junk after Ronald Regan.

Re: Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery

Well I would have a question then. If the 13th Amendment was ratified in 1865 (Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction), what's the point? Has there not been enough apologizing for slavery in the last 144 years? Heck, Abraham Lincoln said "If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong."

Re: Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery

It's just a bureaucratic thing. The president can declare war until he is blue, but it takes congress to make it official.
