N. Korea Says It Has Conducted Nuclear Test

BREAKING NEWS — North Korea announced Monday that it successfully carried out an underground nuclear test, weeks after threatening to restart its rogue atomic program.

The country's official Korean Central News Agency called Monday's test "part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense."

President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency security session. His spokesman, Lee Dong-kwan, confirmed that a nuclear test may have been carried out in the North.

Seismologists from the U.S., South Korea and Japan reported earthquakes in an northeastern area, where North Korea conducted a nuclear test in 2006.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was registered in northeastern North Korea at 9:54 a.m. (0054 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, measured at a depth of 6 miles underground, occurred 40 miles northwest of the city of Kimchaek, the USGS said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also said it detected seismic activity Monday morning. "We are checking whether they were due to a nuclear test," agency official Gen Aoki said in Tokyo.

In Seoul, the Korea Institue of Geoscience and Mineral Resources reported a 4.5-magnitude quake in Kilju in North Hamgyong Province.

North Korea also carried out a nuclear test in October 2006 in Kilju, a test that drew sanctions from the United Nations and prompted five other nations to push negotiations on a nuclear disablement-for-aid pact with North Korea.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Andy Laine said the U.S. government had no confirmation of a new nuclear test.

"At this point we've seen the reports and we're trying to get more information, but we're not able to confirm at this time," Laine said.

I think Obama should send his right hand woman "Hillary" to talk to them and then they won't do this anymore. Just let them know how disappointed we are in their decision to do such things and then send them a few billion of US taxpayer's dollars and everything will be all right there. It will be called the "Hillary-Barak" talking iniative to stop nuclear development. If we talk enough, then we can subdue them into submission and they will fall in line.

we are still technically at war with them because we were unable to beat their tails.

We are not at war... it was a UN operation... SK and NK are still at war.

I wonder... If the UN still wanted to be a viable organization. Would it come back to aid SK honoring its resolutions to defend SK if NK re-invades?

the united states was part of this un action and we are still at war. It is currently only under a cease fire - there has never been a formal peace treaty. If nk invades, United States will be actively involved - we have too many troops over there in all the wrong places not to be.

with these test we are in a defacto state of war, the bombs have simply yet to fall. There is no course left than a hard line with these nuts.

Weapons are this nation commodity, and they have invested millions into a new export.

Yes I know that... I was stationed in SK... saw the DMZ too... It is so freaking eerie...

I was talking about actual declarations of war...

To 40... as tumbleweed said... you have nailed it... however I doubt either side is stupid enough to start a shooting war at the moment... NK doesn't have the numbers to be a nuclear deterrent... they have people numbers but they will get slaughtered... the defenses in SK are too good.

To all: if a hard line is necessary but neither side will start shooting, what is left? More sanctions? Isolation? They've been under the most restrictive sanctions we could think of for 20 years - where's that gotten us? Withhold food support - the leaders and the army will manage to get food. Embargo trade – might PO the Chinese. Board their ships – we can’t stop a few pirates in row boats.

They will sell them red. You may ask WWRPD (what would ron paul do)? But you can't hide in a hole from this one; there is not isolationist solution. You could rehash the past and say if we were isolationist before we wouldn't be here, but it's too late for that, we are here.
