Forced retirement due to age can be justified: EU court
LUXEMBOURG (AFP) — A European court ruled Thursday that forced retirement due to age can be justified as part of broader social policy aims.
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) was ruling on a case originally brought in the British High Court by the Age Concern group, which argued that the law allowing an employer to dismiss someone just because they reached the age of 65 was discriminatory. The court in Luxembourg said such treatment may be justified "if it is a proportionate means to achieve a legitimate social policy objective related to employment policy, the labour market or vocational training." http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp...8VkuLo0tV1nKzA

Next they are going to rule that if you became a burden to society because of medical issues because of advance age, its okay to put you to sleep - permanently.

Re: Forced retirement due to age can be justified: EU court
Not a week goes by where I don't wonder if Britain would be better off out of Europe.
The amount of costly bureaucracy, and additional rules to which we have to conform, and then the European courts that can overturn British decisions and even governmental policies. ...and the economic migrants we have to take in ...and the common agricultural policy ...and the wasted grants on stupid projects ...and the corruption ...not to mention how well the ERM worked out for us |

Re: Forced retirement due to age can be justified: EU court
here they have been hinting at lifting the retiring age to 70 and then 75 in stages
they must be away with the fairy's if they think they will get support for it

Quote:
So many people are living to a ripe old age. So few frail old people are kept by their children, and so much medical intervention is given to keep people living. Not that these are bad things, but it does take its toll on governmental spending and governmental income. So realistically the only way that the governments can afford tomorrow, is if old people continue to work longer. I am in my 30s now, but I expect that by the time I am eligible, retirement age will be over 70. What is curious is why the UK government enforces a law which allows companies to set a mandatory retirement age. I think this will have to change sometime soon. |

Re: Forced retirement due to age can be justified: EU court
over here they introduced compulsory superannuation 20yrs ago which in theory over the next 30yrs should cover nearly all in their retirement age
enforcement was to be by the taxation dept, which did not last long if the government chooses to turn a blind eye where contributions are not made they have only their selves to blame companies are reluctant to employ persons in their 30's let alone 60's and 70's
