Presidentail adress to congress & republican response

link

thought it was a good speech

seemed odd to me that they chose Kenith the page to do the response and that he kept bringing up Katrina; sort of brought up images of a republican patting people on the back for doing a bad job.

Re: Presidentail adress to congress & republican response

I thought it was a great speech. I missed Jindal's rebuttal; I'll have to look it up.

I noticed when Obama said that we couldn't leave the debt to our children, the republican half of the house started cheering wildly, in line with the message that the stimulus is borrowing and it's a bad idea, etc. And so perhaps it voices objection to the stimulus, or perhaps it's a warm welcome to the idea of being fiscally responsible. I thought either message and the act itself were appropriate. That is, I support the stimulus, but I understand the republican principles against it.

The very next line Obama mentioned, as if giving a bone back to the dems, was when he mentioned the deficit he inherited. And that seemed to be like the democratic rebuttal, and about half the democratic caucus started applauding simply the line that "we inherited a deficit." I was actually pretty ashamed at that, as if it were some sort of frat house. We understood that he's inheriting a deficit. That's not news. Nor is it an open-ended ticket to do anything us liberals wish to do. Cheering that line felt very juvenile.

I'm just glad Obama conducts himself in a much more diplomatic and pragmatic way.

I saw some of that speech

The first maybe 30 minutes

Canada is very much tied to the states and I'm glad he's forcing banks and everybody to be more responsible

You did not miss much with Jindal's rebuttal . . it was pretty much fighting battles that have been lost . . "Staying the course!" If this guy and Palin are the future of the party, we are in deep doo doo!

Re: Presidentail adress to congress & republican response

Yeah, perhaps on paper, Jindal's response was a B/B-. But with presentation, it's D/E. It was like hiring a C-list actor to read a script and infuse fake emotion into it. Granted, it's no better than I could do. But that's sort of the point. It felt amateur. But I don't blame him for that, especially compared to Obama, who has had national speaking experience since at least the 2004 DNC convention, and then nearly 2 years of campaigning, with significant prompter experience.

But it really did feel either like he was talking to elementary school students, or an actor for an infomercial. Kinda rough.

But I don't doom him to failure as a candidate for his speaking performance tonight, despite what I think is an obvious disadvantage for him. But it's the content of the message that needs to improve.

Maybe tax cuts are a cornerstone principle to the republican base, but that's pretty much all I got out of his speech. And I don't understand how you're going to tax cut the immigrants out of our country, or tax cut equal rights to people. And even at this point, I don't know how you're going to tax cut the US out of this economic spiral. There has to be something more. Now I don't mind what I think is essentially a concession of power to the democrats, but perhaps our country is suffering because we're lacking a thorough dialogue of how to fix the country.

He reminded me of the used car salesman who was too cheap to hire a spokesman and thought he could be just as good.

Re: Presidentail adress to congress & republican response

I had a hard time understanding why a "Rebuttal" spent so much time criticizing the Bush Administration reaction to Katrina . . what did that have to do with anything??? While true enough, what did it have to do with the State of the Union Address?

Man . . we got a steep hill to climb!!!

Re: Presidentail adress to congress & republican response

Just like President Clinton (sorry, couldn't resist), Jindal is a Rhodes Scholar. Even a quick look at his biography makes it clear that he's an extremely able and intelligent guy. Actually, just the fact that a scrawny, goofy looking kid named Piyush Jindal could be Governor of Louisiana is a pretty good clue.

But, he does need a better message to be a serious contender. It isn't that issues like reduced Federal spending and smaller government aren't desirable goals, it's just that since the Reagan Era, Republicans haven't delivered them. With the economy in the toilet, I think it would be a very good time for both major parties to seriously examine their ideas of what role the Federal Government needs to play, and what our priorities should be. Sorry, I left the Libertarians out Red, but we both know you guys aren't relevant to the meat of American politics
