Illegals applying for licenses risk being arrested

ALBANY — Illegal immigrants who try to apply for driver’s licenses in Erie and Niagara counties will be subject to arrest — and deportation — under a plan being developed by the two county clerks and law enforcement officials.

The move is the latest — and potentially most serious — challenge to Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer’s new policy to permit illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses if they possess a valid foreign passport and other identification.

Re: Illegals applying for licenses risk being arrested

How long do you think it will take for word to spread through the immigrant community to NOT GET A LICENSE. Notice I didn't say not to drive...

Idiots...

Re: Illegals applying for licenses risk being arrested

Give the guys a licease, and let the illegals work our farms.

Think its going stop them from driving? Nope!

I had a friend who had his license suspended for 2 weeks due to a light DUI (in germany even the slightest bit gets you in trouble, he had a beer and drove home a hour later blew like a 0.03 or 0.02 or something really minor)

Do you think he put his life on hold? Nope he just kept driving.

Granted during those 2 weeks he was particullarly careful.

Same for the illegals they are going to drive, and they may just not pull over when they get pulled over cause they don't want to get in trouble for not having a license.

Re: Illegals applying for licenses risk being arrested

Why not just deport them when they commit crimes? Those who commit crimes are not bringing anything good for this country and should not be here. I have less of a problem with honest workers coming over illegally, though. The only way to really solve that problem is to improve conditions in Mexico so that they don't need to come over to the US in order to make a living. You can spend a bunch of money building a fence to keep them out, or you can help improve their governmental system and their economy in order to give them some pride in their own country, where they would want to stay.

Honestly, the driver's license issue has more to it than whether or not they can drive - it is a form of identification and can be used for other purposes.

Re: Illegals applying for licenses risk being arrested

I got no issue with a mexican coming over the border and living the american dream. illegal or not someones gotta start somewhere.

However give them a drivers licease for gods sake. Heres the reason

If they are speeding which all of us do, and a cop begins pursing them to give them a ticket they know that they don't valid insurance nor drivers licease so if they stop they get in more trouble then just the speeding ticket. So they will gun it and it will go from a speed ticket to a resisting arrest/highspeed chase.

Now your thinking so what big deal, well what if this highspeed chase ended up killing someone, maybe a mother walking her kid to school or something.

However if you would of given him a licease he'd of gotten his speeding ticket of course, and he'd of gone along his way.

I believe giving them a licease reduces their risk.
