Starting next month, Fort Lewis will hold one memorial a month for all the dead soldiers.

The Fort Lewis acting commander, Brig. Gen. William Troy, told staff last week that the number of soldiers in harm's way will preclude individual services.

About 10,000 Fort Lewis troops, including two Stryker brigades, are now in Iraq, the most since the 2003 invasion. A total of 127 Fort Lewis soldiers have died in overseas deployments since 9/11 -- 19 this month alone.

Some other Army posts have already consolidated services.

The base commander is already reconsidering...

And need I remind you that our "War President" has not attended any of the services - not a single one. Honor my <TWIBAT>.

Honoring a soldier is about alot more than a memorial service. It involves personal sacrifice. Writing a soldier as often as you can. Invite military families out for a meal.

I'm not saying that you don't do those things, but this seems like a "dog bites man" non-story. At the very least, out of all the bad things going on in Iraq, this doesn't seem important.

(Since I haven't introduced myself, I will say that I am pro-war, but don't like President Bush)

Canerican, I agree that the things we do to support the families of soldiers are very important. I have family in Special Forces. But to accord those who have given up their lives for our country anything less than the highest honor is disgusting. No U.S. soldier who has died serving his country should get less than a full and formal military burial.

They get the burial 21 gun salute and all. What he is talking about is the memorial service... nothing more

So, the memorial service is meaningless? Or just too darn time-consuming and inconvenient? If your parents died, would you cancel the memorial service because of a conflict with Happy Hour or your work schedule? Doubtful. Why should any soldier rate less?

maybe we should do this in the regualr life too ???? instead of having a memorial service for each person that dies, we could wait to the end of the month and have a "gang" memorial

think of the time savings ????

Yes, it is a shame that the president never made it to any of the funerals for that one base. I wonder how many presidents atteneded every dead soldier's funeral??

No, bry - you misunderstood. As for as I can tell, neither the Pres or VP has attended ANY soldier's funeral at ANY base. Not a single one! With 3559 to choose from you'd think he could find the time (to say nothing of the compassion) to attend one.

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
