A few weeks ago on the BBC I was reading the different views that each person had, and I liked Sarkozy best.

Cars burnt, police hurt in French election violence

PARIS (Reuters) - Hundreds of people were arrested in France overnight in clashes between police and protesters angry over conservative Nicolas Sarkozy's victory in Sunday's presidential election, police said.
Official figures released early on Monday said demonstrators set fire to 367 cars and injured 28 policemen across France, and 270 people were arrested in the violent protests against the tough-talking former interior minister.

I don't know why everyone wants to bash the French! What could be more endearing than their unique combination of arrogance and general ineptitude? How can you fail to admire a nation determined to find their own path, even if it leads down a road labeled "DANGER! MINE FIELD AHEAD"?

Let's not forget the Vichy Government of WWII France which not only aided Hitler's "final solution" with what many would consider great enthusiasm, but whose Army and Navy actually fought against Allied troops (fortunately, with about the same success they enjoyed against Germany). Still you really have to respect their elan and gutless, toadying capitulation.

Anyway, I don't think we should forget French contributions on the geopolitical scene of the 20th Century post WWII. After all, they were one of the last Colonial powers to surrender control of their Colonies, and only after they had there teeth kicked out a few times. While in the 21st Century the French may have run out of colonies, they have made their mark with such ground breaking and forward thinking political initiatives as...

Uh, let me get back to you on that.
