Utah lagging in war deployment figures
![]() Utah's vastly conservative population may support the military in spirit, but the state's contribution of service members in Iraq and Afghanistan ranks among the lowest in the nation, according to recently released Department of Defense deployment records. http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_4901330

I suspect these figures, and also anyone that would disseminate them without some context.
What does this mean, exactly ? This reads like State Governments have some role in determining how many troops they send, rather than how many are activated or deployed by the Federal Government. Or a second interpretation could be that it is an indicator of overall willingness to serve in the military; as though the number of troops deployed is determined by the number of people that are willing to enlist in them. But again, who gets deployed (rather than who actually serves, whether deployed or not) is a strategic decision, and it's rather ridiculous to even consider that the number be "leveled" according to which state someone is from, rather than the specific and tactical requirements of the military. Though a Democrat, it's this kind of fluffy, superficial and brainless statisitical rhetoric that truly turns me off of the Democratic Party, despite the fact that a significant amount of my life has been invested in advocating in it's favor, as well as a majority of my family. I expect Republicans to be short-sighted, manipulative and to be willing to lower the level of Public Discourse to the lowest common denominator, as they are not about Good Government, but rather Cheap Government with no public expectation of definate results or enduring change. I hold Democrats and those capable of better, more substantive thought to a higher standard, and this type of "statistical analysis" appears to be the anti-thesis of that expectation. |
