England, Government and the Queen
I'm not posting this to slam the UK and I have not intention of this thread getting heated. If it does get heated, I would like bry or yustr to shut it down. I don't live in the UK so I don't know much on it's government, laws and the political status of the Queen. I mearly started this thread to further my knowledge of the running of this country since some of it just doesn't make sense. I would like our UK members to state their opinions, their likes and dislikes of what makes this nation "Great".
A couple questions from me, 1. Where does the Queen stand. Is she a active in law making and part of the political process or is she mearly a symbol or a higher figure. 2. Why does the government tax so much. I know that other countries have high taxes but this thread is about the UK. |

I don't think I'll need to shut it down. I think the Great stands for something like Greater Britain, the whole island of Brittiania as Ceaser would say.

apparently, in reply to your question, the queen has the power to veto any law she sees fit but in reality this almost never happens because it just doesnt, i dont think the prime minister would let her. I think the queen doesnt paly much role in british life anymore.

The Queen doesn't have much power, but if say parlament got really out of hand, she would come in. She also opens parlament.
And, she gives big awards out to people who have done really good things. She also opens up big things. And meets a lot of people... |

laws aren't passed in parliament until the Queen signs them, but yeah the techmaster is right in that it never really happens for her not to sign. Don't quote me but I don't think it ever has happened.
I'm not sure about her not playing a role in British life anymore though. She does still play IMO a big part. Remember she is 80 years old so she does brill for her age. She does also pay tax even though she doesn't have to as does Prince Charles and she does give to charities as well. The term Great Britain was first used by King James VI of Scotland and I of England in the context "King of Great Britain" as opposed to "King of Scotland and England". Although Great Britain now includes Wales and the surrounding islands. United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland. Taxes are high but then medical care is free. I agree some areas need more money but any organisation or whatever faces financial problems one way or another. Education is also free and in Scotland this includes Further Education at college. The education system is good and continually improving. State benefits fall below other European countries but then UK imo have a higher rate of people quite happy to laze around on the dole. For those that do wish to work then the benefits and help from the government can steer you in the right direction. eg new deal designed for over 25's unemployed over 6 months. This scheme offers training courses to gain qualifications and in some cases experience to get into your desired occupation. You may also opt to do Test for trading. While on these schemes you get your regular entitlement plus a little extra. Prospective employers also get weekly payments from the government if they employ a new deal participant. Test for trading is for people wanting to start their own business but not sure if its viable. You start up and if after 6 months you wish to go ahead with what your doing you sign off, if on the other hand your business didn't do well then what you have earned is counted up and you may need to pay some back. In these cases you remain signing on. You get help with council tax rent school meals prescriptions and possibly some other expenses too. There's lots of other benefits like one parent allowance, OAP heating allowance etc etc that although may seem a pittance to the recipient count the number of recipients and it amounts to a pretty penny. Every parent in the country recieves child benefit for children under 16 (18 if still in education) whether the parent works or not. Every child born after a certain date also recieves a trust fund account I think this is currently £100 And let us not forget our Armed Forces, Police force, Fire Brigade and Ambulances all of which do a fantastic job and risk their own lives every day at work. |
