Interesting article, well written and researched.
I've not seen Gore's movie nor read the book. I doubt I will because I agree that alarmist pronunciations of certain doom are probably not accurate and actually tend to distract from the general discussion. But as Andrew C. Revkin of the NYTimes said recently, after reporting on climate science for nearly 20 years, "There doesn't need to be a 20 foot rise in sea level. A 1 foot rise will have devastating impacts.” He also said that he’s switched his position to supporting the view that manmade causes are contributing to the pace of warming. If you read any of his articles it is clear he is not a “left wing wacko”. So the argument once again boils down to “Why not strive to reduce our emissions”? What is it about reducing the amount of industrial waste that we send into the atmosphere that so many find objectionable? Or is it that “the Left is for it so I have to be against it”? That might explain it on a person level. At the corporate level its clearer; reducing pollution is seen as reducing profits. Industry has already proven that unless forced through regulation they will exploit resources with little or no regard for the impacts beyond the bottom line. So people are again using the normal process of scientific inquiry to obfuscate the issue. That’s easier than coming out and being truthful and saying “I’m for dumping as much crud into the air as we can.”
