Trivia Corner

Robert went into a store and said "I'll buy that calculator for $10 if you lend me as much money as I have
in my pocket. The clerk lent him the money and Robert gave him $10 cash. He went to the next store and bought a $10 cap
using the same gambit. Then he bought a $10 umbrella with the same strategy. When he paid for the umbrella, he had no
money left. How much did he start out with?

Re: Trivia Corner

$8.75

he borrowed $8.75 the first time, so has $17.50. he spends $10, leaving him with $7.50.

the second time, he borrows $7.50, so has $15. he spends $10, leaving him with $5.

the third time, he borrows $5, so he has $10. and he spends all of it.

He started with $0.00.

He repeated the same tactic and finished with $0.00.

but if he started with nothing, then he couldn't have borrowed anything.

Re: Trivia Corner

beefers1's right.

Starting money = x. After first purchase Robert's got 2x-10. Afer his second purchase 2(2x-10)-10. And after his third purchase 2(2(2x-10)-10)-10.

2(2(2x-10)-10)-10 = 0
8x-70=0
x=8.75

Re: Trivia Corner

a good way to working it out technically, justpassingby. i was going to do that until i found that trial and error was actually easier in this case.

Robert started with $8.75. In the first store, he got $8.75 making $17.50. He spent $10.00 leaving $7.50.
Second store - borrowed $7.50 making $15.00, spent $10.00 leaving $5.00. Then he borrowed $5.00 making $10.00,
spent $10.00 leaving zero. Robert may open a hedge fund.
Good Job Beefers1.

NEW QUESTION:
In the late 1700's a famous explorer asked a native what was
the name of the man-sized animal he saw. The native replied (in his own language) - "I don't know!" To this day the animal
is named by that phrase. What is this animal?

New question:
Jamie typed four letters and four envelopes. She folded and stuffed the letters into the envelopes without really looking. What are the odds that only three letters are in the correct envelopes?
