My System

I built a new desk today

Well i started on it. My brother has my digital camera or i would show you what i have done so far. The first pic is my old desk and the second is a 3d render of my new one. It looks way worse than the render sone most of the wood is different colors. But it was free wood and screws so all i put into it was time and effort. Once i putty and paint it it will be awesome. And it fits perfectly in between the wall and that green and the couch.

To mimo: no. I actually am building that desk. That is just a 3d model of it I made in rhino.

To yustr: I've had that compaq since 2002. It is pretty ghetto but it still works reliably. And those speakers were just on woot.com like 3 days ago and they work wonderfully.

So what do you think of the desk?

I would add in a pullout tray for your keyboard and mouse so that you can have them at a more comfortable elevation (works for me)..of course elevation is relative...I prefer to have a free deskspace at a higher elevation, and as noted have my board and mouse on a tray that slides on drawer guides...

if you plan to load that top with a fair amount of weight, you might want to seriously consider some sort of support for that inside corner...I can see the top of your present desk sagging (probably because its made out of MDF (or worse particle board) core material) which makes my point...

if your present free materials are made out of such a material, you will NEED to have some sort of support as mentioned (I would strongly advise using plywood for the top because of structural reasons)...even with plywood you will need some sort of front edge band made out of wood of 1"X2" dimension to add some very necessary strength...on my workstation I have a 5' span that has 2 monitors on it, 2 key trays, and the dimension of wood I used (some nice flamey maple) was 3/4"x2 1/2", and as expected there is still about a 1/4" deflection in the birch plywood top...

and if possible a rabbit joint for the L on your top would be the best move (sounds like you probably don't have the tools for that)

The desk is now done and it turned out great. My brother still has my camera or i would post some pics. I just need some spackal and paint it will be awesome. Also today i decided to make a new entertainment center. Again i only have a 3d model but it looks just like it. Only took like 4 hours total to take apart the old one, cut the pieces and put it together.

OLD ONE

NEW ONE
