it depends on what you want to do with it? if its just for writing papers, surfing web and email, just about any laptop will last you 4 years. but if you need one with some power, that'll cost you. my bro got a hp, 17" big cpu and drive and ram so that he could use it for his classes, running autocad. its awesome. i'm not a fan of them, but it runs great, and has the power he needed. other than that, being an apple fan, i'd say get an ibook. they are relatively inexpensive, and robust. and apple computers have a longer than normal life span than other computers (i'm still using a 466mhz g4 desktop made in early 2001, and it runs the latest os, and apps just fine, albeit a little slowly). plus apple's are not prone to all the malware out there that win based computers are. so i recommend an apple ibook, with at least 1gig ram, then as big a hard drive you have money for. plus they come with wireless and bluetooth built in, not extra cost.

Take a look at ShopProStar.com and Acer's line of notebooks.

Another option for the budget conscious is to check the Sunday ads in the paper ... CompUSA and the rest often have Toshiba notebooks with a decent rebate.

2 things I tell every notebook buyer - don't skimp on RAM, and get the extended warranty (accidental damage if it's offered as well).

If you just need a simple machine for typing and other desktop work then a machine from as far back as 2000 ought to do it. My Acer is a powerhouse that has handled all I've thrown at it. My ThinkPad, while a few years older, still runs like a champ.

well i do play a few games and also when i do research or typein a report or something that still is not easy on my computer, i tend to look at like 15 to 20 websites and have microsoft word open and also playing music

also i think i will get a student discount from sony, gateway, apple, toshiba and MPC (never heard of) so if i get a laptop it will be from 1 of them n which generally is the best?
