Lazy kids... Stupid parents...
For two days now I have had parents come in to do their children's homework.
Last night I had a woman come in and ask to use a PC so her son could type up a paper. Seemed normal so I assigned them a system and let them go at it. I watched as the mother did all the research and printed her findings. Her son sat idly by reading comic books. When she came to the desk I said, "I thought you son had to type that. He was just sitting there reading comics. What you're doing here could be considered plaigerism!" She got this weird, half-angry half-scared look and said, "I always do my son's papers! His teacher knows this 'cause I told her and she said it's ok!" Alright, alright... Today another mom came in to type up something for her daughter.

If the kid does the research and she types it up, that is fine. I never type any of my proposals at work. Mommy shouldn't be doing juiniors homework and the teacher probably just thinks she is typing it. What you should do is send an anonymous letter to the school board.

Parents doing their kids work? Ever been to a Science Fair?
It probably has more to do with the parents expectations and desires than the kids being lazy. "If Johnny doesn't get a 4.0 in kindergarten then his whole life will be ruined." One thing that bothers me is how easy school is. I'd rather my kids get C's in tough classes than A's in easy ones. But then the psychology/politics of schools kicks in and it all goes to !@#$ pretty quickly. Last edited by yustr : 03-03-2006 at 10:23 AM. |

This kid did squat. he read a Batman comic while his mom did the whole thing.
When I did my last science fair project my dad just helped me with the idea and obtaining materials.

He could have a learning disability and she didn't have time to help him all night that day.

I got really behind in 5th grade once by some 30 assignments. My mom helped me to get the finished, but she never did any of them for me! My parents wouldn't have even typed anything for me.
My kids (when I quit being selfish with my and my wifes time ) will be doing everything! Even the typing. That is a valuable skill that kids need to learn as well, especially since our future is becoming more and more technologically advanced everyday!

I think the point is more the kid being a lazy little (CENSORED) and mommy seeing nothing wrong with the situation than that the kid isn't learning anything.
I look at it this way: # of times i've had to "write up a paper" since graduation: 0 # of times i've used algebra since graduation: 0 # of times i've had to give a verbal speech on some random subject: 0 The kid might also be very advanced. Just look, he's already learned how to Delegate. ![]() |

Hmm, I can't say the same as you there Curt....
# of papers written up, at least 3 per week, such as business proposals, code documentation, etc # of times algebra used, at least 5 times daily # of times given a verbal speech, at least once a week as an update on current project, and various other random occasions. Delegating is one thing, Cheating is another. To be honest, I agree with my old physics teacher. He thought that school should be there to teach you, not to get you set up for teaching yourself, so school shouldn't give out homework. However, if it's set, it should be done.

My friends mom used to type his stuff for him, but only if he had it written down first. My mom would say |-|3!! no!
But then going to what yustr said: Quote:
Now back to our previous discussion. I really have a dislike for the kids whose parents do their work for them. Spoiled little ^@%!*&@ !!

I think it all has to do with this fine educational system we have. They don't fail students like they used to do.

The principal point of school should be to instill a desire for knowledge and to teach you the tools to satisfy that desire. I do agree that homework usually means the lesson wasn't well done. At least until college where it means - "I don't have time to teach you everything you need to know to be considered knowledgeable in this subject. But you still need to know it." |

Ah, I see what you mean there yustr, but I was only really talking about pre-college education as I've never been to college or any other higher education places, so I've no real knowledge of how they work.
Above high school I can understand the need for it, as the topics certainly get complex enough to merit it. During earlier education though, there should be no need for homework at all. As you said, it's the sign of a badly taught lesson.

High school in the United States is a complete waste of time. I don’t recall doing anything useful in high school. Homework I usually only did what was due in the first class then I did the HW for every other class while I was in my first class. Math I did really well in it but I learned math more from my dad then any teacher I had in high school.
College is a bit better depending on the teacher. If you get a good college teacher you can learn a lot. If you get a bad one the class is as much of a waste of time as any High school class. The main thing I learned from school is if you want to know something you can’t rely on teachers. You have to go out buy some books practice and teach it you’re self. A good teacher can give you the tools to learn a subject but you still have to spend the time outside of class to get good at it.

Yeah, I hate to say it but High school is a complete waste of time. I am in french 2 at HS, and take a CE (continuing education) french class at a university nearby. The CE class meets once a week for an hour and a half; I've learned more there than I have in the 3+ hours a week I am in french at school.
