Windows Vista.

First off, let me say that I like Windows, at least since XP came out. I don't just use it because it's the most prominent, I actually LIKE it.

That being said, I think that when Vista comes out, no matter how good (or bad) it is, anyone who is "Anti-Windows" and "Anti-Microsoft" right now is STILL going to be that way.

It doesn't matter what they've done to the Kernel or the Driver System or anything whatsoever. People who are "Anti-Windows" are always going to be that way - and people that don't know any better are just going to agree with them...

It drives me crazy.

My personal preference is MacOS but I don't have a Mac anymore. After that I like Windows XP. I was reluctant to take it up at first, hearing rumors of rampant bugs and security holes. You also needed a beefy machine to run it when it came out and PCs then were barely up to the task. Now I've been using it for about 3 years and I actually do like it, despite the quirks it has.

Yes, I am looking forward to Vista as well.

Yes, I have used Linux and found it to be utterly useless for what I like doing on my PC.

ditto

WinXP is a good system. Vista should be decent also, but as ebackhus mentioned about XP, Vista is going to require some good hardware to get the full effect of it.

I don't agree however how microsoft is creating Halo 2 for Vista only! That is going to kill their sales. Its a ploy that I don't think will work.

at the moment the annoying thing in vista is everytime you seem to run anything that could affect the system a box pops up asking to allow or disallow the action
have not worked out yet if you can turn it off
but it self recovers from 98% of blue screen problems

I agree with that 100%.

That's because the Kernel is much more secure than in previous Windows versions. I don't know if you'll be able to turn that option off, as if you did, the security would drop dramatically and you'd be more prone to major virus and worm attacks. However, it's still only a beta program and they're still doing some major tweaking i'm sure. So it may change a bit yet.

That's because most drivers are running in User Mode now instead of Kernel Mode, another great move. This allows several other things, also.

When you upgrade drivers for most components, you won't have to reboot the system (it should be like your logging out and logging back in). Blah blah, anyway...

One of the good articles i've read: Why Windows Vista Won't Suck.

A key improvement to the root file system and memory management of Vista is a technology called SuperFetch. SuperFetch learns which applications and bits and pieces of the OS you use most and preloads them into memory, so you don't have to wait for a bunch of hard drive paging before your apps or documents load. Microsoft has developed a pretty sophisticated prioritization scheme that can even differentiate which applications you are most likely to use at different times (on the weekend vs. during the week, or late at night vs. in the middle of the afternoon).
I think that very cool but I never been one to trust any computer program to predict my usage patterns. So my question is will there be a way to manually set what is pre-loaded into ram instead of windows deciding for you. If there is a way that extremely cool.

we'll see when it gets here. my biggest hang up will most likely be the price. ms always asks too much for their sw. i was reluctant to goto xp too when it came out. i had a perfectly good install of 98se. then one day i some how completely blew it away. there was no fixing it. so the guy that was helping me talked me into getting xp instead (i didn't have my 98 cd with me, and would have to go get it anyway, so why not just get the latest os). so i did, and after about a week got used to it, and loved it. by far the best version of win i've used. but like eb, i prefer mac os much more, which is why i use my mac for just about everything. the win box is for games only.
and just as joker hates win bashers, i hate mac bashers. have you noticed that the biggest bashers have never used the os they bash? they do it out of some really stupid reason, and are rather uneducated on the subject.

MS bashing is an easy subject, let's face it. Everyone has their own special moans and groans, but, no-one is ever going to please all the people all the time. I like XP, I find it much more stable and reliable than 98. Sure, it's not perfect and I don't expect Vista will be either, but who's got time to wait for a perfect piece of software? Perhaps my great great great great great great grandchildren might get to see that.

BTW sinclair, never used a Mac so I can't comment. But my daughter used one at Primary School and she said it was fine. Then she would come home and use Windows no problem either.

Yeah, MS finally listened to me. I've been ranting about exactly that for years...

I hope it's not easily defeat-able. If so, then the leaches and trolls will just make another "Your system may be infected. Press here to clean..." exploit.

I also hope that it tells me the impact of the change "If you allow the action, this will happen..." e.g. "If you allow this action, Vista will change your browser home page to www.buyme.com, which is on the MS list of hijacking web sites - list updated 30 minutes ago." Now we're getting somewhere.

i think xp will join the previous op.systems in noah's ark by the time vista is released
the ones that moan and groan about windows, should try the pre windows envionment
when windows came along you just pressed a key instead of labouring along programing everything you wanted to run
price is always a big factor in upgrading, when xp pro first came out it was A$699 now you can buy it in the supermarkets for A$125

I'd like to try Visat, but from what I've read all the extra quirks seem miniscule. Advanced searching, whupdedoo.....

And eb, the first time I actually tried Linux I loved it. I never booted into Windows until one day when I wanted to play a computer game, then I just formatted over the Linux spot cause I only had a 40 gig hdd. Now I have a 250 + the 40, and I just can't bring myself to boot into Linux.

Henry I have to agree with you.

I've been doing some reading as well and although most people seem to like Vista, it does sound very much like XP in a fancy gown. Plus it appears to be a resource hog. Oh well, once it's on SP3, I'll consider it.

We need a poll: What's the unit of measure before the first Vista vulnerability is discovered by the hacker community?

Release + seconds?
Release + minutes?
Release + hours?
Release + days?
Release + weeks?
Never: It will be invulnerable!
Release - days?

And just a clarification, hackers are good (white hat)! Crackers are bad (black hat)

Who cares about an Aero effect? I'm perfectly happy using bbLean and or Mindows.

to Glas: I agree, why buy it when it comes out? SP3 will prolly be out in 2008, but I can wait!
