Geico

The New Jersey Star-Ledger compared the rates of a 30-year-old single male from Newark and found if he were a lawyer with a master's degree he'd pay $1686 a year. If he were a high school educated janitor, he would pay $2880 -- 70 percent more.

New Jersey law allows insurance companies to determine rates by factors with a proven relationship to losses. The law prohibits charging based on certain factors such as race and ethnicity.

http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/09/987.asp

ps : Massachusetts insurers are not allowed to use race, sex, education, or anything other than driving history and driver's education for inexperienced drivers. Age doesn't matter unless you're old. A 16 year old with a new license pays the same as a 25 year old with a new license.
thats why geico is not in my state . And that's why a lot of companies do not write in Mass.

who said ? good news i saved a bunch of money ........

I know, at least when I got my license 9 yrs ago in NJ, that you were starting with points on your license which would come off in a couple years. I guess kind of like a probation type thing. I was 17, but now you have to be 18 or something to get your real license.

I've heard of those. Many states call it a graduated license.

I move we make the minimum driving age 35!

Actually in some European countries they graduate the hp of the vehicle you can drive and the speed at which you can drive it. That makes more sense than saying: you're 16, if you want to go buy a GSXR-1000 that will do 185 mph - go right ahead provided you only drive it during daylight hours.

That's stupid. You can be just as irresponsible in a car that only does 70 mph as you can in a car that does 250.

What burns me are these kids who are given performance cars by their parents, lose them in a horrific wreck while barely escaping with their lives, only to get ANOTHER one.

the main point in the article is :

Um, wouldn't they be descriminating against DUMB people? If geico was really the only one to charge poor people so high, these people should and have to find a much cheaper company.

I think it was originally only done on engine capcity here for a while. The speed only came in recently I think with the Mazda RX8 - using the pistonless Wankel Rotary engine. Small capacity engine, but horrendous power output. Unlimited, it can do well over 160mph, and it's only a 1.3 litre engine!

I understand that Insurance companies base their costs on percentages and averages. So to charge someone more just because their job or educational status seems wrong, but, in a sense, understandable. I do think that if you then prove your driving record is just as good as another's with a higher income or education you should receive the same benefits.

I know in PA I went for my car ins. and they wanted to charge me $1500/6 months!!! They said it was because I have poor credit (because I was just starting to build it, it was actually little credit). I was able to get my insurance cut in half with someone pulling some strings for me.

Percentages and averages, fair enough, but why do airline pilots have such high premiums? They're in control of millions of pounds worth of heavy equipment, they take hundreds of people's lives into their hands every flight, yet they're considered a 'high risk' category driver.

Here in Louisiana (especially the New Orleans area) basic insurance rates are outrageous.

I'm 36, never had an accident, and have proof of no claims dating back to 1992. The last quote I received for liability and theft was $110 a month ... on a Ford Focus!

Now, when I ws in the service in England, I had 2 cars:

1988 Porsche 928s4 - max insurance with $500 deductable (fire, theft, hail, Godzilla ... you name it I was covered)

1989 Mistubishi Gallant - liability only, but more than the basic

Total per YEAR - $690 ... That's right ...

Glad I have dealer plates/coverage on my car ...

From my understanding , geico and alike , overcharge people for having bad credit and low education level , wich is totally ridiculous , i am glad they are not in mass.
it has nothing to do with your ability and your skills of driving , and your respect of the law by not having speed tickets , this was my last 2 cents !!!
