They are an EVIL thing, we have thousands of them here in OZZ and each camera raises millions of dollars a year. Anyone who thinks they are there for our safety are kidding themselves, They are purly revenue raisers

PS. they are very prone to giving false readings also

It is funny I noticed when I lived in England that people would learn where they are so they would speed around and just before the cameras they would slam on their brakes.

I agree with this ...... they once tested a radar device on a high rise building in one of our cities and got a reading................. how accurate can they be?????

There was one on the A-11 just before Thetford that went nuts one night ... it's like the sensor saw an road rally going by and just kept taking pics ... while everyone was stopped at a red light!

The stupid thing about a speeding ticket from a speed camera in this country is you won't be prosecuted if you delay it more than 6 months after the date of the photo - which you can do legally and legitamately. You string it out as long as possible, and they just give up.

Of course, I'm talking about the relatively minor ones, if you go past one at 170mph, or course you're going to get done, no matter how long you string it out.

Yeah, they've got them all along the M6 (Non-Toll) motorway. None on the M6 (Toll) of course..... they're getting their money's worth out of you already.

Use to live in Thetford and those things would always go off regradless of your speed. But I never once got a notice in the mail. Either that or they all came in after I went back to the states. Maybe I should check on that before I go back to england one day.

I once heard about a guy who was caught by one and the local authorities sent him a photo of his plates and a fine for $40. Feeling comedic he sent back a photo of $40. The authorities replied back with a picture of handcuffs.

My brother used to install the damn things. He installed one down the road from my house and told me the speed setting - very handy. However he also said that you can set them off from the opposite side of the road, but it can't take your picture. I can confirm that this is true.

Not quite - it will record your speed but as long as you're within the limit you're OK. Mind you it must scare the s@@@ out of some folk when the camera flashes and they're carefully watching their speed, knowing that they are within the limit. Of course, sometimes there's no film in the camera - just the fact that it's there means everyone slows down. But, as 95 said, people just slow down for the camera then speed up again once they're passed it. The new ones are average speed cameras - they measure the time you pass the first set and the time you pass the second set - with a specific distance between the two sets.

Time to build that radar jammer I have plans for. Should I go for spoof (false speed reading) or the one that fries the electronics?

you know what the best thing about these cameras here? 1st, they are on highway, not city road, so lawyers are trying to get scottsdale for invading the state's turf. second, a major city of scottsdale lawyer has come out and said that unless an officer of the law gives you the tickets (serves you), you can pitch them with no legal ramifications! and the news told us that, as well at what speed they are set at (76mph).

Glas, I've always been led to believe they're set at (the speed limit * 1.1) + 5mph - does this tally with what the one near you is set at?

Oh, and Terrister, false reading all the way, you don't want to get involved with an unlawful damage to federal property case

Not necessarily - the one down the road from me is in a 30mph zone but you have to go past it at 42/43 to set it off. Although I think you are generally correct - there is some allowance (around 1% I think?) for inaccuracies in your vehicle's speedometer, plus they would have to change the film every half hour if a camera was set to go off at 41mph in a 40mph zone!

It's the average speed ones that will really catch people - there are several on the A77 from Glasgow to Ayr - very sneaky.

Yeah we have loads over here. They are too sensitive in my opinion and also some of the speeding offenses weren't fair either.
