Plan Tying Teachers' Pay To Student Progress

MIAMI -- The Florida Board of Education unanimously approved Tuesday a plan that will grant bonuses to the state's top teachers, an assessment that will primarily be based on how their students perform on standardized tests and other measurements.

ps : if the kid is not doing his homework and not willing to make effort to progress , the teacher will be frustrated ...
I guess you could call this "Income-based Education"

Well.... if this doesn't encourage teaching to the test and not to common sense. Long live job security for those who can think for themselves!

This won't make smarter kids, it'll make dumb kids that get better grades.

hmmm, I get 100k a year for all As, and 80K for Bs? I'll give em all As for an extra 20 grand a year!

How are they going to deal with attendance? When my son was in 6th grade we attended the year-end awards program. The went through the top students in math, in science, etc... Then they handed out the awards for attendance - anyone who missed less than a coule of days got one.. And guess what, every kid who had been mentioned earlier was on the stage - and only a handfull were up there who had not got some other award.

To me that showed a direct correlation between being at school and performance. So I ask again, how is Miami going to adjust the performance if the kids don't attend. Now add it how involved parents are. How much they help with homework. How much they insist on reading rather than TV (or other diversions) etc.

It's putting way to much focus on the teacher and not enough on where it is probably broken - at home. Ask any teacher about the home life of her best students and her worst and I'd be willing to wager that nearly 100% will say that good students have involved parents and that failing students have parents who have failed as parents.

Can you say "scape goat"?

Truth

Very well spoken. Often enough, the teachers are looked to as a service that is supposed to teach the kids manners, work ethic and social behavior. This is not what our school system was desgined for considering the students only spend 1/3 of their day with the teacher. When parents take responsibilty for the actions of their children, then and only then will you have an advancement in the education level of this country. But... you have to feel bad for the teachers, 4 years of college education....60,000 dollars in the hole to become a social babysitter.

Parents have gotten lazy. My sister in law never helps her kids with their homework and it shows. My wife and I help our daughter and then find another example to make sure she has learned it. Do the odd problems 1-30? OK, but then you do the even ones until you can demonstrate you know it. Even the 3 year oldd twins we make enunciate their words. If they say "me want to eat", we correct them.
