Dust laced with asbestos? I thought it was illegal for ANY building, no matter how old, to have asbestos in. I seem to remember in the UK a period of loads of buildings having the asbestos ripped out and replaced.... wasn't this the case in the US also? If so, why was there asbestos on the site?

We try and get most of the stuff, but a few places still have it let over. They are required to clean it out though, but man does that take money.

I remember that the World Trade center buildings had some sort of fire retardant sprayed on most of the supporting beams. But I don't think the building is old enough to have asbestos.

Asbestos cannot be used in new products but asbestos containing material (ACM) already in use does not have to be removed just because it has some asbestos. Only if it presents a danger for exposure does it have to be removed or incapsulated. Mostly it is removed during renovations; when pipe and wall insolation are exposed. If a building has ACM fireretardant on the structural steel that may remain there forever.

When demolishing a building with ACM, special precautions must be taken to preclude releasing the asbestos into the air. Obviously that wasn't possible for the WTC.

I say we add their deaths to the 9/11 tally. Woops, I pulled a republican and mentioned 9/11 again.

DISLAIMER: THE ABOVE STATEMENT IS MEANT IN A PURELY SATTIRICAL MANNER

What planet are you from that you don't think anyone but the republican party cares about 9/11?

Edit: Okay then. Maybe it was because I'm not used to an event so horrible being used for a cheap shot at people who you perceive to not want to mention 9/11. My bad. Under 21? I guess you would have to be drunk to find that funny.

I was reading an article about this and it was due to the abestos, dust, concrete that was inhaled. Of course you'd expect further complications if you did inhale that.

The fire retardant that they originally sprayed on the steel (ceilings/floors)contained a significant amount of asbestos) . They only had enough money to fix about 6 floors per year, and they were doing so. I have yet to see any clinical research on the survivors, re aqsbestos, but part of the may be that the asbestos was on the upper floors, which burned and let to the collapse. Folks who survived that area were so inundated with smoke containing plastics and other synthetics that it might be difficult to attribute death to one single thing. Unfortunately, the study group would not be that large, as many if not most of the people on those higher floors died in the building, or soon thereafter.
