Homeless Advocates Name America's 'Meanest City'
WASHINGTON -- When it comes to the way it treats the homeless, the city of Sarasota, Fla., is being called the "meanest" in the country.

Very strange. I don't live in the US but those cities named are few that I would have thought fall into that category. In Aus, I don't think the homeless crisis is that bad.
Sure, we're not the best country in the world when it comes to that sector but we get by

I'm surprised to see SF and Santa Monica on the list. Last I was in SF you had to step over a passed out homeless person about every 20 steps...
I have a freind who was a cop in Knoxville, TN. During a big event there a while back he was ordered to "remove anyone he thought either didn't have a home or was a prostitute, **** or drug dealer". No arrests, no warrants. Just haul them out of town. And reinforce the city's desire that they not return for awhile. Talk about "Mean"...

Yeah SF cleaned up recently, that's why it's at the top of the list. And they're always going to have beach bums in Santa Monica.

I wonder how SA made the top 15 of it. From what I've seen we're rather kind to our homeless population. We have plenty of organizations to help the city's homeless and the public is quite generous with donations of time, money, and other necessities.
