Study: Waking up like being drunk

CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) -- If it takes a while to clear the cobwebs after waking up, that's understandable -- "sleep inertia" leaves some people so groggy they might as well be drunk, researchers said on Tuesday.

I heard that on the radio last week, they say for certain people it can be worse than being drunk! Don't wake up and drive!

I used to drive back and forth between Dayton and Columbus several times a week. Once, I remember myself getting sleepy on I-675 just south of I-70. When I did the customary head jerk to wake up, I was at the US-35 exit. That is when I starting drinking coffee.

I'm usually pretty good about this... I've got about 5 seconds where I've got no clue whats going on, then I'm wide awake. Strangely enough, if I was drunk the night before, I wake up straight from sleep with a clear head.

I never have that problem, unless I didn't get enough sleep, which is most of the time.

Good thing no one is around when I drive to school in the morning

I don't think I have that but I do not like being rushed in the morning

Sometimes I wake up without a hint of of grogginess, other days I can't seem to move at all. I guess it also matters what it is that wakes you up. I use the alarm on my cell phone that starts blaring music at set times. Other people have gradual alarms that increase in volume/light to wake a person gently. Maybe I'm crazy but I prefer the immediate form. I also set the phone on the other side of the room so I'm forced to get up and silence it.

Yeah I'm the same way as ebackhus. Somedays I can wake up perfectly, and other days it's like leave me alone!! Then when I was younger, I guess it's cause I slept in a wrong position or something, but I couldn't move when I woke up; I'd have to strain myself to be able to move. But that never did happen often, and hasn't happened in a long time.

But I've never been drunk so......

And what time do you all get up? I get up around 5:20 just for the heck of it, and school starts at 7:20; I like to be there for 6:50.......

5:30, 5:35, and 5:40.

(I have to hit the snooze a couple times each morning before I'm ready to get up. )
