mmm, preservatives

Before I'd left my apartment for the month, I'd made an attempt do something with all of my perishables... Now I'm back, a month later, and I realized there's some Thomas' brand bagels I missed. They weren't even fresh when I'd left... but they're still good (I didn't try them, but they're still soft and there's no mold). Now if only the preservatives in food had the same affect on the consumer.

I can relate to that, at my age I can use all the preservatives I can get.

That's why store bought hot sauce taste like crap compared to the real thing. Go to El Taquito, try the hot sauce, and I dare you to tell me you don't regret eating all other red stained tortillas you ever had.

When I worked at Pizza Hut, we had a 5 gallon container of KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce. It had a shelf life of 6 years unopened and 3 opened.

That is just scary.

I once left a tub of I can't believe it is not butter sitting out for a week and it still looked exactly the same. It did not melt or anything it just got a little softer.

well "I can't believe it's not butter" is pretty much oil, and that never goes bad. But I can't stand how they put vinegar in every thing with tomatoes as if we wouldn't be able to tell it taste like crap.

Spread yourself with oil, or better yet, twinkies. Twinkies have a shelf life slightly longer than the last Ice Age.

Some years ago I was on an 11 hour flight from the US to Africa. They served us a meal that had a tub of orange iced something as the dessert – imitation ice cream. Even with a minor in chemistry I had trouble reading the ingredients. I let it sit there for about 3 hours (much to the chagrin of the flight attendant) and after all that time – it came up to room temperature but did not change consistency in the least. It was just a jellied blob. Imagine the look on the faces of my friends who actually ate the stuff.

I don't know if this is still true, but Mc Donalds shakes are not frozen. They are just cold and think.

But they may have changed to real ice cream recently.

Soft serve isn't frozen (the stuff in the "ice cream" cones)

Its just a cold, thick mixture, like the milkshakes

Still yummy though!

According to wikipedia, most preservatives found in foods aren't really harmful at all to the body, but I'm sure they affect the taste to a certain degree.

MREs still by far the worst tasting food(although some aren't to bad). That and if you've seen the nutrition facts on cold weather MREs....I remember reading 1 item in 1 of those that had about 125% colesteral and 50% sat fat.

MRE's are pretty good. They've improved with each new version, and with the addition of name-brand accessories and the heater packs ... I find that I enjoy them.

I have to admit I like the shakes and the pound cake in them but it goes down hill from there.
