rootkits

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1887826,00.asp

"It's the equivalent of a big, bad guy turning up at your door, walking in and plopping down on your couch and refusing to leave. You're asking him to leave, pleading with him, screaming at him, and he just sits there and refuses to move. That's astonishing. It's really terrifying," Kaminsky added.

how to see if you have a root kit,

Make a folder entitled $sys$text.txt and if it disappears then you have a rootkit on your hands.

I think that's the name of it but I can't be completely sure, I'll try and find the source.

What's the explanation for the dissappearance?

This is what I found:

"Try this. Make a file with notepad on your desktop called “test.txt” (no quotes). Change that filename to “$sys$text.txt” (again, no quotes). If it disappears, Sony’s screwed you."

well the rootkit hides anything with the name $sys$text.txt I believe. You can actually use the rootkit to hide your stolen music from the rootkit.

it hides anything, file or folder, with $sys$ prepended on the file name.

All clean here!

I haven't bought a Sony CD for a while and won't buy one either for a long time to come.
