Driving weather

Why does everyone forget how to drive with a little snow and ice on the ground? It bothers me after a measly small freezing rainfall that no one remebers the basics : Downshift (in a standard) tap breaks (non-ABS) steer into a skid, not too fast (or slow) safe stopping distances!.

And then to top it all off, Little Suzy reporter has to do her reprt live from the salt barn. Unless it is on fire or there is a dead body inside, it is not necessary.

Yep, the good ol' salt supply barn. Or standing on an overpass watching the traffic on the road below.

This happens when it rains too.

Or people slow down when they drive over a long viaduct. I call it bridge syndrome.

How salt could possibly catch on fire is beyond me, but I get your point

Yeah, it's ridiculous. On our way to skiing one year we saw some cars skid right off the highway during a snowstorm. It was ridiculous, and you could just see them losing traction and starting to swerve.

Hey try living in the south - where they get some snow/ice but not always. I lived in Knoxville, TN for a while (btw where's elf been?) and even one large snow flake caused those usually wretched drivers to become downright horrific. (And to panic and clean out the grocery shelves.)

Though I did see a dump truck, fully loaded with gravel, slide through an intersection attempting to stop from <20 mph. Needless to say the rest of us didn't stand a chance.

That's always hilarious. People buying enough groceries to feed an army for 2 months enever the word "snow"is mentioned.

And yet you have to do it cause evryone else does. We were without power because of ice for all but 2 stints of 12 hours between 12/23 and 12/28 last year. I wished I stocked up on things. I had to grill hamburgers in -10 degree weather.

We got snow *thank God!!* for Christmas last year, but it hasn't snowed like that (about 1-2" in my area) in...... at least 50-100 years!

what is this snow you speak of? I can't understand how bad people drive when it's raining, can't imagine how bad it is when there's ice in the picture.

Trust me, it's overrated.

Between stocking up on skin moisturizer, sand and ashes, and sliding around on slush and ice, it's something I could do without. The occasional howling wind day is also rather annoying, not to mention the sun going down at about 5:00pm. And you wanna complain about the price of oil at the gas pump? Try putting it in your car AND your furnace.

One day I'm just gonna move to a desert state and never look back.

White Christmas my a**.....

When I went up to Ohio over Thanksgiving it was 8F and there was about 4 inches on the ground. When i got home to SA I was greeted by an 80F blast.

...

It was for all practical purposes 10 TIMES hotter here!!

We have some of the New Orleans citizens decide to take up residence here in Nebraska. I'm wondering how they are coping with temps and the snow. Some of them never seen snow. I wonder how they like driving in the stuff. BTW is -1 F here. What's it like in your neck of the woods?

Our 4-6" turned into less than 1. Now that's a job we all can relate to: get it wrong 75% of the time and still get paid... Down in the 20's today. Colder tonight.

To get the correct snowfall total= (x/2)-.5z where x is x-y inches predicted, and z is the number of days in advance they predict it. So if tonight they say you will get 6-8 inches Friday morning you would probably get <2 inches.
