Exxon makes more than Kuwait's GDP in 3 months...

I don't have an article link but I saw this in my local newspaper. According to the latest earning reports, Exxon brought in more money in 3 MONTHS than Kuwait (one of their oil suppliers) makes in a year. At the same time other oil and gas companies are posting recording breaking profits that are even higher than a year ago.

The sign across the streat says $2.49/gal for regular. Connection?

This is a tough one; thy need to be punished for gouging, but at the same time we don't want to look too much like commies.

Feh. The Feds regulate all the wrong things. Anybody remember the Bell company breakups in the 80s? (or was it late 70s... ).

Let's see.
If I was a leader of a country and I had stocks in an oil company, would I do anything about it?

Apart from sell the stock, start talking about regulating it, then re-buying the stock when it's dropped a few points? Nope.

Jefferson said that we get the government that we deserve. And in this case he's exactly correct. Our government will do nothing because we don't want them to.

Sure we rant about high gasoline prices - but we still buy Suburbans. Prices go up but consumption doesn't go down. Take public transit to work - not me. All over Europe downtown areas are walking only – nope, too inconvenient. Our architecture does not reflect the local conditions - two story block houses in the desert southwest? The "ignorant" native peoples knew more 300 years ago. Over 20 years ago I talked with a guy who built a very lovely house that was totally energy independent - how many of those are there today? We don't think twice about driving 100 miles to celebrate Grandma's birthday - then turning around a coming home that same day. I could go on but you're getting tired of this rant and you're chilly so you have to get up and turn up the thermostat - so you can continue to lounge in shorts and a t-shirt...

That's one of the reasons America has such an obese problem.

Parts of Europe may be like that, but we're not as well off in the UK either. Our government are making a huge push for people to use public transport, saying we don't need to use our own cars. What I want everyone here to do is for just one week, everyone who can use public transport, to do so, and not use their own cars, bikes etc.

When the public transport system collapses under the sheer weight of people using it (and it will), then we can start bargaining with the government to lower tax on fuel.

OMG I do remember the bell breakup. Oil companies are not allowed to invest their profits into new refineries or drilling sites. Lift that ban and see what happens. My lefty pal is right.... until we conserve more and stop buying guzzlers gas will be high. We help set the price. I drive 75 miles round trip each day. I am able to coast 5-10 miles of my trip in neutral, depending on traffic.

I'd take the bus, if they ran at 6am. Right now I'm moving to a house that's 3 minutes from where I work and I'll use my bike. Groceries are just down the road and I'll only need my car for business trips which happen like 2x a month.

What percent of profit equals gouging in everyones opinion? How much should a company be allowed to make on a dollar?

Capitalism demands that you make as much profit as possible. If he were still alive Sam Walton would be the richest man in the world and nobody ever accused him of gouging. I think the oil companies should make as much profit as possible, but not the way they are doing it. Why is it that when they raise gas prices, it is almost always on a Thursday?? Oil companies raise and lower prices sporadically and without explanation. That is the problem with them.

There are alot of variables that go into the pricing of fuel. Supply and demand plays a big part. I am like everyone else, I'd would love to see the days of $1 per gallon of gas but I think the oil companies have a long way to go go before they should be considered gouging. 9.8% on the dollar is far from gouging. If we want lower prices the government should ease up on regulations and allow more drilling.

BTW my gas prices have been steadily going down for about a week and a half. But I live in Wisconsin so I probably still pay more than you.
