Boycott AOL

The American-based internet giant, AOL, wholly-owned by Time-Warner, has formed a working partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to permit unlimited surveillance of the millions of AOL online members, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

I thought the Patriot Act was supposed to be used for anti-terrorist measures and preventing online money laundering. Does this mean that all AOL users are under suspicion? It won't be long before everyone's online actions will be monitored and recorded for any government department to look at.

And what makes you think they are not already???
Look at the bright side they do not have the people it would require to watch everyone. They mainly monitor for key phrases and words. God what a boring job that would be.

It's mostly done via software, called data mining. And only if the computer flags someone, do the analysts get to do their reviews.

This is off topic but... I remember when AOL first started advertising that it came with Anti-Virus tools and I yelled out, "Yay, it has a new uninstaller that works!" My non-geek friends didn't get it.

Anywhooo, I think AOL should be banned for being a resource hog. Millions of kids and pedos all saying "A/S/L LOL!!111!!" really begins to eat up our precious Interweb bandwidth quickly.

I have never used and never will. It's like that ear thingy Khan put in Chekov's ear, painful and hard to get it out.

I once used AOL back in the days of Win 3.1. Can't remember ever using it, but I know we had it for like a year.

My family was using it shortly after Win95 came out. I remember having a terrible time explaining to my dad that what he saw on the screen when using AOL was not the internet, but AOL's website. In the early days, AOL seemed to try to convince people who didn't quite know what the internet was, that it was the internet. I've hated AOL ever since.

I usually tell my customers who use AOL (and subsequently have to bring it to me to be fixed) that AOL is just like training wheels - sooner or later they both have to come off.

That's a good analogy. I think i'll use it sometime in the near future.

On the other hand, AOL has been "that evil ISP" for over a decade. This should surprise no one.
