I would salute my first computer but I'm afraid I'd knock over the stack of punchcards...Actually my brother and step father wrote some clever programs on his C64.

i was a sheltered child so my first computer was a eMachines eTower 366i2 packed with Windows 98, that computer was awesome. i learened alot of what i know now by experimentign with that computer. needless to say that experimenting led me to install win98 12+ times in ONE summer ;) yep good times. then i moved to a compaq presario and then to a custom built comp. o man the transition were sweet. once u go cuztom. i don't think there is any going back to manufacturers. atleast IMO

Yeah, I don't think you can get the same kind of satisfaction out of buying a computer that you can out of building one...
Yeah norin, go for it- the 64 is a much nicer computer, and you can find them for less than the IIe. The cool thing about the 64 is that it's not depressing to use like an old DOS machine invariably is. It just has a ton of character, and it's fun to use. I don't really know how to describe it other than to say that it's a computer you can see eye-to-eye with. Make sure you find one bundled with a bunch of software- it's well worth it to have them, because otherwise you'll be limited to experiementing with the programming environment.

hey but at least it ran on dos. Not that I ever has a real use for dos (I was barely getting the basic hang of it when stopped using the OS) but the very nerdy complained when it was gone. |

i actually tried installing 3.1 on several comps and no it wouldn't work. i once saw a comercial online for windows 3.1 for 99$ it made me laugh. and who was selling it. good ole steve balmer. and u bet he waas pumped up to tell you it had a calculator in 4 colors and a paint program WOW!!!. thanks steve. what's next? lol
gotta love steve from what i understand, the 3.1 is much like the Program manager in windows 98 not sure if it be the same for other OSs of the windos structure but i know in 98 the PM was much like 3.1 Last edited by norin; 10-06-2005 at 11:11 PM. |

yeah that was the original, kinda stopped there didn't they?
same crappy calculator (you'd think with a Pentium under there it would be able to do more than a Casio but...) and same crappy paint, and same games except for my arch enemy free cell. Last edited by 40sondacurb; 10-07-2005 at 12:21 AM. |

The C64 was the coolest! My first proper computer (not counting ZX81) was the Commodore VIC20, the C64's older, slower brother. I got it for Xmas when I was about 12, and used to sneak down late at night, take it from under the Xmas tree and carefully open the wrapping paper. Then I would practise typing on it... not plugged in or turned on, just because I liked the feel of the keyboard! I could touch-type Goto, Gosub and Data but had to search for the other letters. I claim the Geek Of The Week prize

Odell Down under, Oregon Trail, Amazon Trail, Dinopark Tycoon (which I cheated at). I will say that the mac versions of these games ran a lot nicer than the 95 versions. That quickly changed...

May have been a newer version of that- the ones I played were on Mac 75's with the GUI and support for CD-roms, with that stupid adapter thing.

![]() Hey, don't feel bad. I didn't like the 3.1 either. But I was like 4 or 5 when we got it..... My grandpa has it now, and I got on it. I still don't like it. If you minimize something you lose sight of it, and everything was in boxes, no taskbar to minimize it to......

My first computer: Tandy 3000.
It ran DOS 3.1, had an 8Mhz 286 processor, 512K RAM, and a 5 1/4" floppy drive. We put in an aftermarket 10M Hard Disk, (not hard drive), so we didn't have to boot DOS from the floppies, and a brandy new 3.5" floppy drive. Any of you that remember the five-and-a-quarter's know why they called 'em floppies! Good times, and God bless DOS...
