hmm you have to have a business licence. That is an obligation. So you will be registered and will be paying taxes. Also repair business wont be satisfying after a while and you will decide to build and sell systems and to buy the parts cheaper from suppliers you will need a business licence. I know many people running businesses as you mentioned above for some pocket money, nothing decent.. Illegal ? yes it is. who cares ? i really dont know, they dont seem to :)

Shouldnt take too long. Depends on th eoffice and state regulations tho Pretty inexpensive too. If you can manage to run a good business why not ? I am planing to get a licence soon too. Just to do somethings on the side and leave some of my looong hrs.

You'll have to declare all income and pay income tax or the IRS might get a wee bit upset. Your Governor will want his share. And don’t forget your local Board of Supervisors; they need to be fed.

Then there are local zoning ordinances to consider. Mostly you can work out of your garage but it’s worth a call to the local land use office.

The Small Business Adminstration is your friend. They can help you with applications, etc, etc. Basically, you need to add the appropriate taxes to your charges, and send them in pperiodically. The rules, time limits, etc, etc, vary widely from state to state, and even city to city.

If you begin doing business legally, you will be an old hand at it in short order, and that will help you in other areas, as well.

Knowledge is power, and starting your business will make you a bit more powerful.

Figure on taking home 75% of what you take in. But remember, the IRS has made more liars out of the American people than even golf.

I'd have to say if its just a local repair business, I'd start with some ads in some sort of free paper. Around here, our local grocer gives out a little ad booklet. It costs a little to get in, but lots of people read it looking for good deals.

NickelAds also does the same sort of thing, don't know if they are a national chain or not.

Other than that, word of mouth is good too. Let your family know what you are doing, and they can reccomend their friends when their PC's get busted.
