Here are the MP3 players I'm looking into... what do you think?

One question, can I use these devices to store word docs and such? And do they need software to operate on foreign computers like the ones at my school library.

Yes they can store any type of media that can go on a hard drive, no not all of them are plug and play. Mine requires software. And if you aren't 100% sure an mp3 player is worth the money to you I'd hold off a bit. I got all excited about mp3 players and ran out and bought one, and I never use it. It was a pretty big waste of money.

I see what you're saying myquitehead, once you get the MP3 player you got to commit to buying CDs as well.

Not sure about those.. the first MP3 player I gat was a WeWa! it was nice, but I just got a new 1 Gig MP3 player from MPIO http://www.mpio.com/product/productview_fg200.html it's nice! No drivers or software needed. Just plug the usb in, and it's recognized as removable disk. So I can make folders and store anything I want in them. This MP3 player plays video as well, and can view photos.. really cool.

not so.. I have a large collection of about 1000 songs. If I were to buy an mp3 player, it wouldn't go unused, mainly because I already have the music.

If all you have is 2 cds, then its not worth it.

maybe if you have 15 CDs, then you could get a small 512 meg one...

Wow, thanks man. I was going to just the regular mp3 player, but then I realized that I can use DVD decrypter to save at least two movies on there and have ample space for songs.

well it'll take me 2.5 months instead of 2 weeks now, but I think I'll go for it. Thanks

Dummber:

I've been planing to stock up on cd's anyways, so this will serve o motivate me a little more towards that end.

But until then I'll catch up on my oldies and jack a couple of my moms cds.

Yeah, especially since you only have to encode them to 96x64 resolution

Scratch that.

I think I finally got it this time. I'm going to go with this one http://www.iperris.com/camp34.htm

scroll down for tech specs

it's only $165

$183 when you add tax and S&H

it has decent reviews too.

only 32 megs of memory.

I'd be careful getting something like that. its meant, IMO, more for video and stuff than for music.

If that's what you want, then ok, but if you want an mp3 player, I'd look for something that has more space.

well it uses SD/MMC memory cards to store the information mainly. I like that better because I know I can always upgrade it later, and I know exactly how much memory I have. So in my mind I'm getting more space than most players because I can carry as many sd cards with me as I want.

It plays 8 hours of music and 2.5 hours of video on a rechargeable battery.
That's pretty good battery life for something that as a color display plays vid.

I want to look a little into the future with this purchase. I don't want to get a music only player when a media player that can do a ton of stuff like this one is going to be the next big thing anyways.

plus I can use it to record video/sound and use it as a sd card read/writer too. I think it's a great deal.

please tell me if I over looked anything though, the last one I posted didn't have a battery in it

here's something you overlooked.. it can only take a 1 gig card.

an SD card that size can cost upwards of 80 dollars. Buy 5 of them for 5 gigs of space, and you could have bought a creative mp3 player with like 40 or 60 gigs of space.

But I don't plan on buying that many, the zen vision cost $400 bucks compare to $165 for the one I'm looking at.

that 30gb looks very tempting but the thing doesn't record movies or take pictures.

I don't plan to use more tan 2gb any ways. If it were 300 or even 350 I might consider it but that is way out of my ball park.

I think I'm going to look around a little more though, see if I can find something better than the CAMP34

good lookin out DD

40 gig for less than $200, just for the record. it doesn't take pics or anything, but its still less than the 400 dollars you quoted...

your 2 1gig cards will run about 160, and then tack on the player at 160, and you have 320. Its 120 dollars cheaper to get a plain mp3 player and you get 20 times the space.

I'm not trying to discourage you from getting this one, especially since you want the video and camera capabilities.

Just sayin'

I'll probably get something like this one next fall, before I go into college.

not at all, I am very great full for any negative responses. The video recording was just an extra for me, not required at all.

but this doesn't play video is the thing. All I need is mp3 and video, as long as I can ge those two I'm good.

Please, keep me on my toes about this. $200 + is a commitment I don' want to make lightly.

That's a list of a bunch of portable media players, ranging from about 250 to over 400.

That should keep your options open.

If you're looking to go all-out on this, maybe the Creative Zen Media center is worth a look. I haven't ever touched one of these myself, so this isn't really a recommendation...but in my opinion it would be a lot wiser to go with something made by a known reputable company than to buy something off a web page with horrific grammar mistakes on it- which is the majority of the examples in this thread.

If you're willing to wait for the price to go down, Creative is introducing two other video units which should bump the price of the current player down considerably:

The MuVo Vidz, which I would recommend against based on the fact that you only have a gigabyte of space to work with, and the Zen Vision, which seems really cool but I would expect it to cost a lot initially. After-post edit: Turns out that the creative site has an option to pre-order this, and the price is set at 399.99. Expect the price of the current one to fall to 299.99 or so once this thing comes out.

The current video player is the Zen Portable Media Center, which currently retails for over 400 dollars, though I would expect it to be either phased out or have its price reduced when the other one is actually released.

Asia always has better stuff than us in N America. We get all their old sloppy models while they get the new stuff. I got my cell phone & first MP3 player imported from Hong Kong cuz we got such a large Chinese community here, that the import lots of stuff for reasonable prices. I was way ahead of my friends in tech gadgets. Anyway, try looking on YesAsia.com, they got lots of cool stuff, and they are a big company with reliable service. Here is a link to their electronics section, they have lots of cool MP3 players: YeasAsia.com Website

I'm sure that means if it breaks, you're SOL.

Not only that, you'd more than likely be stuck with a crappy UI and less-than-perfect software...

My friend bought an Archos media player a year or so ago- I think they're from France and made in china or something...and it broke- twice.

Not only that, it had terrible battery life and got alarmingly hot when playing video, which I think contributed to both the battery life and it breaking.
