Kinda makes you wonder why they couldn't simplify words like pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism doesn't it?

Not quite true..... you need to know the word in advance. A french person couldn't read it at all, but if they knew a little english it would become just as easy as for the rest of us.

Also, it tends to work best with short words - try making a sentence with longer words (say a load of 3 sylable ones) and see if anyone else can read it as quickly.

Wow, that's crazy!

It's amazing how complex the human brain is.

Of course, I've sort of acquired a skill reading spelling like that. Since many people on the internet seem to be troubled when it comes to typing with correct grammar and punctuation :P .

The thing about that is it makes you read faster... I'd love for textbooks to be written like that, it'd make everything go faster....

Don't you think it's fun having a difficult language? The more complex the language, the more exactly you can nail down your intent. It's how 5 word poems can have worlds of meaning. If you use the proper verbiage, you can relay your thoughts either quickly, or beautifully. Shakespeare makes me mad though, lol. I feel like he's dangling a dictionary over my head and laughing.

They say that english is one of the most difficult languages to learn because even though there are so many rules there are at least that number of exceptions.

I like the way you can judge what we think is important by the number of words for it in a language. Inuit (sp?) has 100's of words for snow. On the other hand, think how many words we have for boobs!

You think English is difficult? In 10 years time when China becomes the world's economic leader, our children will have to learn Chinese in school... and we'll have to help them with their homework, so start learning now

Yes! The wonderful world of words that all mean almost the same thing! Since I'm apparently not allowed to search for "boobs" at work I tried "boob."

Not quite as effective but hey, all words that can mean the same thing but give a very different feeling when you hear them:

***, birdbrain, blockhead, bonehead, boob, bore, buffoon, butt, chump, clod, clown, cretin, dimwit, dolt, donkey, dope, dork, dumb ox, dunce, dunderhead, dupe, easy mark, fair game, fall guy, fathead, goat, gomeral, gomeril, goose, halfwit, idiot, ignoramus, illiterate, imbecile, innocent, *******, jerk, lamebrain, laughing stock, lightweight, loon, lunkhead, meathead, moron, nerd, nincompoop, ninny, nitwit, numskull, oaf, omadawn, ownshook, pushover, sap, schlemiel, silly, simpleton, stooge, sucker, turkey, twerp, twit, victim

And boobs are very important btw.
