I'm sure your university will let you go in undeclared...Just take the required classes freshman year along with some generalized Information Technology classes, and by the second year I'm sure you'll have some idea of what major you want to go with.

Telecom is a good carrier path. I have taken some courses in my program relating to that (Data Comm and telecom).
With everything though...nothing is easy. But if you keep yourself caught up, you'll do just fine. If your not too sure, ask a career councellor at your school. See what careers are in demand, and go with what you like. For me, it was all pretty decent until we got to the FDM,WDM and TDM...oh..and multiplexing...ughz. I think with that career path, you will end up working in a communications firm... or relativly similar feild. *Edit* Oh, and Good luck!! ![]() |

Wave Division Multiplexing. In terms of programming languages, we had 2 courses of C++, one was an intro, the next was objected oriented programming with C++. There is also so database programming with excel. They also threw in some wireless program, ,such as Wireless Security and I cant seem to remember the other one. And Im pretty sure you will need to learn some basic electronics fundamentals.. using the oscilliscope, power generators..multimeters..the basic tools as well as principles (Lots and lots of graphing) but it also can get a bit hard if you don't practice. I didnt notice you mention BIS. That field is in such high demand here in T.O. In my program, I get the chance of working 3 terms with a company and getting credits for it..I've done my first term with CIBC and Im starting the second this sept with them as well. Its such a great opportunity. Basically gives you a chance to put in practice what they teach you at school. Lots of the big Banks and Tech companies hire for those positions. All entry level positions are basically help desk or tech support. |

damn i can't edit my post .. , anyway guys nevermind the last post ..
the Q is : what's better for me to study now since my goal is to study telecommunications later : CE (Computer Engineering ) or CS ( Computer Science) ?? because currenty we don't have "Telecommunications" Major here where i live, and i can't travel outside right now, but i can later .. , so i want to study something for a year or 2 here to nail the diploma and then study telecommunication later outside. I cant really say how your school system is but I can tell you how it is where I am.
Firstly, CE and CS are 2 different programs. The program I am in now is closer to CE. Im currently studying Computer Systems as my Major and Networks Engineering Technology as my Minor. I just finished my second year of the program. It is a 3 year course. Before this program though, I used to be In CS (called comp. programming in my school) for a year. The main difference is CS focuses on programming above all. You get to work with Java, C++, Linux/Unix ..anything you can program...they teach it to you. With CE, you get to do some programming and you get to work with the basics of the hardware itself focusing on the electrical components, the system. My personal experience tells me that CE was much harder for me becuase of those darn electronics courses. They really get you working and studying the core of the system. (The voltage traveling through the board, current dividers, all sorts of laws) They even get you to build your own calculator and cable tester from scratch...upto more advanced devices..which I am not at yet. Only reason I am still in this program is cuz I like it so much. My advice, if your gona get into Telecom, then study CE. Some courses you take in CE, you will need to repeat with Telecom. But since you already took them, you can just get your credits trasnfered! Also in telecom, you do focus on electrical devices and use pretty much the same equipment in your labs. |
