Where is the "No, I don't wan't to restart my ****ing computer" button

Having installed a lot of software over the last few days, I've started to get annoyed at some companies out there, who think my life revolves around their program, and in particular, when they ask me to restart my computer.

There's the "OK" button, that restarts your computer, but I think more companies need to put an "I'll do it later, thankyouverymuch" button on there.

Anyone else have complaints about software egomania?

I don't like some of the freeware crap. Some of it is a pain in the a$$ to get off. Then I hate the stuff like McAfee, where you pay for it, then it is crap!!!!!!!!!!

That button is probably next to the "any" key they are always asking you to press to continue.

Yeah, I have something to add to this "software egomania" thread. Like how almost all commercial software wants to be added to your startup. No thanks, I'll just wait the 2 seconds it takes for the program to be loaded from scratch. I don't need to wait 5 minutes for my computer to start up for some programs I use once a year. For example, I don't know many people who burn a CD every single time they sit down at their computer. Some programs give an option to take itself out of startup, but a lot still don't. (And I know about msconfig, I just feel like I shouldn't have to use it.) And how about asking me if I WANT an icon on my desktop. I know some programs do ask, but a lot don't. All I'm saying is give me a choice before you litter my desktop and make my games lag.

YEAH!! Exactly, who in heck uses MS Office as soon as they turn on the computer?? Maybe after surfing the net for a few minutes, I mean do you really want that resource hog being on startup?? I'd rather do it manually.

And what a resource hog it is, boy howdy. I'm surprised there are enough system resources left to type anything. Which brings up another point: Low system requirements are not just for people using 5 year old hardware. Just because I have a decent computer doesn't mean I want every program I have running in memory sucking up resources while they sit there being useless. Especially when you play games where more is better. To take a line from Charleton Heston in The Ten Commandments "Let my resources go".

My System

If you don't want the computer to restart, bring up task manager and kill that process.

I agree completely, it's damned annoying forcing you to restart, but sometimes it's a good idea, especially if it's changed some system files - if you install something else aswell, it may change those system files also, in which case one of your programs won't work next time you start the computer. At this point you then need to install it again, and restart again, so it's just not worth the hassle.

I can't really complain about restarts, it only takes 30 seconds or so to get back to a point where I can use windows again, during which time I normally go and get a drink from the kitchen.

Henry,
Have you taken a look at the OpenOffice.org suite? All the same apps & formats as the MS version, with a bunch of goodies. Less of a resource hog than MS & best of all it's free! (Or in my case the best part is feeling like I stuck it to M$ by not purchasing their $200 program.. Go open source!!)

I've suggested this to friends many times who ask me if I can get them office...I tell them, why not try open office? it works just like M$ office but it's free and faster...

I used M$ office for a while and then I found open office and I use it now...I like it better

Microsoft Office 2003: $171.00, Open Office: Free with cable internet, otherwise small media charge. It's your money, spend it how you want to. A relative recently bought Office for her laptop because she needed Word for her new job in real estate. Had she told me beforehand I definitely would have told her about OpenOffice. She then said "Well, I needed to be able to open them at work with Word anway". I told her you can save them in that format. As for me, I've used it since I found out about it, and as of now have no plans to change.

First time I downloaded OO, it was on dialup...took me about 3 days starting and stopping it...but I finally got it. Wouldn't have Word if MS included it as a free upgrade to ANY version of Windows...
Back to topic....I agree...let me know if the installation has changed any system files enough to warrant a restart - then let ME decide to do it.

Too bad there isn't some sort of happy medium that can please the people who know what they're doing & those who haven't a clue.

Oh wait, how about a diologue box with 2 buttons!

I HATE NORTON. Everytime I had a virus I would have to go to safe mode for the damm program to acturally remove it. most worthless program ever.

I use PC-cillian internet security 2005 now and been very happy with it for the past 7 mounths. I would NEVER go back to Norton.

There are plenty of those hanging around Windows - the problem is usually only one works; e.g.: "No CD found, please load a CD in Drive E"...retry-cancel-ignore but only retry works. (I may have the specifics wrong but y'all know what I mean.) What makes us think the software vendors would get it right either?

You need to order the advanced keyboard for your computer. I don't have any problem with the ANY key.
