New Jersey is messed up

http://kyw.com/Local%20News/local_story_205134803.html

New Jersey proposes auto smoking ban, with 250 dollar fines for offenders.

All because a legislator's dad died of emphysema. What a joke! Why should people not be able to smoke in their own cars? Why not ban eating and drinking coffee in cars too, I'm sure more people died from distractions relating to in-car meals than from smoking.

What did you expect from a state that won't let you pump your own gas?

True. That's what you get from a state whose legislators have personal vendettas and try and push them through with legislature. We already lost the right to use cell phones in our cars...

I guess it was an attempt to create jobs...but from where I'm standing it's a violation of rights

The open cantainer law covers drinking I believe, as of to my knowledge it covers all beverages, but I could be wrong.

I personaly can care less if you smoke in your car, just don't through your butts out the window. I hate that with a passion. Its even worse when these people do it when we are in a drought.

I don't see not being able to pump your own gas as a violation of rights, I see it as a convinience. I don't have to get out of my car to fill it up.

Maybe it ups gas prices, I don't know....

Auto smoking ban? What does that have to do with someones dad dying of smoking? They are still going to smoke, just not in their cars, and they'll just piss off a big voter segment.

A convenience maybe but it's a law.

The legislator that wants to get this passed had his dad die of emphysema and now he's out for blood in the form of pissing everyone off.

I'm sure the reason they give is "it's a distraction" which it is. But we already have a law against not paying attention while operating a motor vehicle. Same thing with cell phones. Why not radios too? How about putting on makeup? Reading books? (I'm sure we've all seen fools doing these and more.)

Re: eating and drinking. During my time in Germany it was unthinkable that a driver would eat or drink while they drove. In fact, none of the cars came with cup holders. You should have seen the looks we got as we drove on the autobahn munching a slice of pizza. (Fox, is this still the case?)

I've had my fair share of singed clothes from smoking in the car, and that's not even when I was driving.

I don't really know if it's still the case, but I do know that the family I stayed with was alright with it- we had granola bars or something on the way back from the Netherlands. But it's true about the cupholders- German automakers usually balk at the idea of something like that.

Does anyone know if they still have the no self serve gas law in Oregon? That is the only place I had ever seen that.

Sorry, never been to Jersey.

Wow, have not been there since the mid 80's. Thought it would have changed by now.

Any other states think the average person is to dumb to pump their on gas?

Anyone with small children know they are the biggest distraction. Twin A takes Twin B's bear. B hits A. A hits B. Dad pulls the car over so mom can hit them both.

What about road construction, that can be distracting to see a huge crane at work.

That's the problem with legislators. Most of them are lawyers, so they make the laws vague and open to interpretation. This leads to the courts having to clarify the law. If Congress doesn't want judges legislating from the bench, make better laws.

Oh my, I think I just steered this one towards politics,

That's what the one-handed chauffeur reach around is for

So yeah, I'm thinking we should outlaw small children. A national law this time.

Im all for that one ;)

My mom still tells me the story of how the worst wreck she ALMOST had was when she turned around to see what I was doing in the back seat.
Iv got a law Id like passed... no dogs in back of pick up trucks * which is also distracting and not to mention dangerous* Keep to dog in the cab or inside the car, buckled in the seat belt or crated . And back on topic, if all states go to no self serve gas, then you can always let your dog pay the pumper for ya :D

Probably because adds like 20 cents to each gallon because of all the extra people they have to pay to work there. Gas here is like 2.55 a gallon right now

You think you've got problems?
Here in the UK a woman was prosecuted in court for eating an apple whilst driving through the town.
Another young guy was done for "having his music up too loud".
The police spokesperson went on TV trying to justify it.
Doesn't it make you angry, they do anything to make money out of drivers.
