Map out a leason plan that relates to their lives. There are plenty of online reasorces that can help you find scriptures that relate best to youths.
I think the bible is best taught to people in their language. I don't think people get the same connection to the word if it is told to them in a foriegn language, because then the word becomes a foriegn thing. But best of luck to you in your indevor.

actually the whole lesson plan will be given to us and we the teachers will discuss it this whole week .. but at the same time we have to set up our own plan
and this retreat was purposely made to be in english :P koreans are crazy about learning english so i guess saying that its an english retreat was some what of a bait? Regardless of if they understand 100% if they get the main idea i think that will be a sucess |

Where is Korea are you going? Becasue my wife is stationed at Osan AFB right outside Suwon and she told me that most of the koreans then already speak some english and they are very willing to learn more.

I'm going to bet that the leadersof this misssion are going to see that you have everything that you need.
What you need to do, right now, is stop thinking about those other folks as Koreans, and think about them as people. That's who you will be talking to...people. Sounds like a hoot to me. Rev up and get ready for the ride! |

Hi toxic
I hope this helps in some way - im sorry its a rather long reply. Im a lecturer in art at a college in the uk - dealing with groups of 6 to 40 students at any time in the week ranging in age from 14 years to 60+. My advice to you would be to learn there names as soon as you can - but make it a fun thing - an ice breaker - show them that you are there to learn part of there culture- (their youth culture way will be different to the general culture you will experienece). By doing this, making mistakes (and dont worry you will never remeber them all, all the time) you will show them that you are human and enjoy the learning as much as they should be. Always Ask lots of questions - make them do the work searching for references and answers etc, you shold be guiding them to find the messages for themsleves not just handing them the answers on a plate. The best way young people learn in education is from themselves and in group work - so get them doing small group work activites and then go around to each student and talk to them indvidually. getting to know your students is the key to getting them to learn. In this way you end up not speaking to the whole 20 all of the time, you may speak to groups of 4 or 5 and then to the individuals - breaking up the stress for you and making a more diverse and rich learning experience for the children. Dont be afraid to ask questions to them about things you dont know about, say 'we could learn this together' and show that you have as much enthusiam about learning new areas of the subject as they should. If you dont know an answer to a question say so - dont pretend - that will get you in deep water - you cant know everything, you are afterall a human first and a teacher second. Have fun - even though you may take your subject seriously, dont make it a didactic lesson, and force knowledge, young minds get distracted and bored very easily, so break the lesson into small chunks, explain what you are doing what they will be learning and then review what they should have learnt at the end. Make sure you talk to each person, they are all important and will have important things to ask or say, wether it seams it or not to you as an adult. Be positive all the time to questions and in your reactions. I hope that helps in some way - dont worry you'll be fine. You can always PM me or create a new thred while you out there if you need any advice, if i can help i will gladly. good luck and safe journey steve |
