Your Worst Job Ever?

Fox’s breakfast got me thinking….what’s the worst job I’ve ever had?

How about this one…doing quantity and composition surveys at garbage dumps? Early in my career I did a number of studies to determine the type and amount of waste thrown away in various cities. These involved counting trucks, weighting loads, estimating volumes, and sometimes – sorting through the piles and separating it into categories. Try breaking open a plastic bag only to find week-old diapers.

On top of that, it was usually hot and dusty and required some very long days.

On the plus side, the drivers usually felt sorry for us and we accumulated a huge stack of porn mags.

Hey I like that plus side, care to send a few to me?

LOL, no jking but it is a good plus side. But I can't say anything because I've never had a job.

ehh...none of my jobs have been horrible. I mean telemarketer for chimney sweeps wasn't too bad because it was just me and a couple of my buddies sitting in a room by ourselves. We got to mess around so much it wasn't even really like work. I guess it would be my current job (roofing), and only because it's hot

(there are more than 2 jobs but those aforementioned jobs are the worst)

Yard Dog at a truck salvage yard.
In the 2 weeks I was there, the owner fired 11 people. One day he walks in, tells the secretary "grab you things, your gone", then tells 2 more yard dogs "pack your tools, your gone", then tells the truck driver "your done". The engine guy left because he didn't want to be the next one. That was just the truck salvage side. He has three other yards I didn't know what happens there. I quit after the 2nd week because I just couldn't stand the morale.

Hey, have you ever heard of mad hatter chimney sweeps? no, no one has. They bought their equipment back in the 80's and the owner has spent every dime of profit on himself. Now all the equipment is in disrepair, the technicians barely know what they are doing. We get complaints constantly that the technician messed up someones house somehow. It was a failing business with no where to go but down the drain. They will NOT outsource those jobs anywhere guaranteed.

Crab/Lobster & Salmon processing in Alaska. We'd pluck them out of the bay & sometimes further out to sea & then bring them back to the processing facility. We'd pick up the crabs & impale them a hook, then strip of the shells. Cut or yank off the claws & then send them on down the line for further processing. Those buggers were all alive when we got back to the plant so now & then you'd get a claw clamped down on your hand. So most of us took to carrying a hunting knife or hammer on us at all times. I think most of the people that worked there for years were missing at least 1 finger. Your hands got so cold that often times you didn't know you had sliced yourself open until after your shift was over & you realized some of that blood was yours. Shortly after we arrived there my 2 friends bailed & went home to UT, so there wasn't enough money for a place to live. I had enough to get a tent, sleeping bag & pair of hip waders at a second hand store. I pitched my tent out in the woods about 5 miles from the plant & biked there every day on an old 10 speed I found in a dumpster. The place where I pitched my tent was a mile away from a police academy so I would go jogging with the recruits every now & then who thought it was funny that I was living there. Worst job I ever had, but best time of my life.

Retrieving balls at the driving range. They gave us these red and white stripe shirts to make us good targets. After I graduated college, I went back bought $20 worth of balls, stepped up into the field a little bit and pasted the office.

Thanks bry - that's great we all wish we could turn it around like you did. Now there's a biological rational: read more here
