Canada : The recording industry has failed again in its attempt to force internet service providers to reveal the names of file-sharers but it may be able to try again.

Only in Canada, hehehe.

Maybe if they didn't charge 20 bucks for a CD and 30 for a DVD, people would buy the damn things instead of downloading.

I'll admit it, I download music. Not alot, but I still download my fair share. But guess what? If I like the CD, I'll go out and buy it. I just like to make sure I like most of the songs on the CD instead of just 2 or 3.

I download because 99% of what I've downloaded isn't even available in the US or cost a CRAPLOAD to import. But I also agree on what I feel is a waste of money to buy a CD with only one or two songs I like.

What I don't understand. As new technology comes out, it is priced fairly high. As it becomes older technology the price drops. CD's have not done this. They are exteremly close to the same price as they first were. I'm sure their profit margin have gone up on CDs though. Then they only pay the recording artist a few pennies per CD. Now who is ripping off who? Now I still go out and buy CDs if there are enough songs on it I would like.

Let’s face it; the recording industry is living by a dying business model. Early on it was necessary to be on the radio to get the artists heard. Then if they hit a vein, people would go out and buy the record.

Along comes the internet and rather than embrace it as the new “radio”, they fight it tooth and nail. So what do folks do? They create file sharing programs and spread the word that way. What do the companies do? They fight that too.

Here’s my business model (royalties to TSF): set up kiosks in malls with a CD burner and a high speed connection directly to the record companies. It’d have a catalog of 250,000+ songs and charge you $0.10 each for as many as you want to fit on a CD. Then I’d add a few free ones of new artists in the genre you select. That way, you get what you want and the labels get their new artists heard.

BTW: I agree it’s ridiculous to charge $13 for a CD of a record that was recorded 25 years ago, and had no money spent on it since (except for remix and digitizing which has to be pretty formula-matic by now). All of the labels investment has been paid off years ago. Charge me $2.50 and I’d buy lot’s. (I probably have close to 1000 CD in my collection now.)

I hear ya! I wanted to do the same thing but with Japanese music. We had a store in the local mall that sold and imported things like anime, video game, and general Japanese music but they moved to another mall and have since become another Hot Topic/Fast Forward clone.

$13?! You go to the record stores around here and most CDs are still around $19.99. The $13.00 are some of the older CDs, but some of the more popular older CDs are still $19.99. Heck, I still see CDs for $24.99.

go to any store ( also e-store) and ask for some indi music or some kind of african music :

clerk : oh , no we dont have this band or that cd ,sorry .

you go in the underground of the internet.....and you find it ,and it is free.

conclusion : the industry of music needs a real shake up like this, people (potential customers) dont have to look for alternatives options .

Hell yeah, I agree 100% with the point of 'declining value'. And, I don't know where you shop, but music that was put out a good 20 years ago is STILL around 20-25 bucks at my local store. I've had some pretty good debates with this, but I still fail to see how people can support the recording industry. It's so easy to record your own music and get it out. With that desktop printer that actually prints on top of the CD for graphics, have that and a highspeed burner and you're set. I know a few bands(which I saw yesterday for 3 bucks) that do this, and I bought their CDs just because they kicked ***. One of them refuses to be signed by a big label out of principle.
