Fire crews save naked man cuffed to toilet

well...umm.this was reported on Kansas.com....link to actual article at the end

It is not every day that Wichita firefighters find a panicky, naked man handcuffed to a toilet in a motel room just set on fire.

The bizarre incident happened early Friday morning at a south-side motel that advertises "nice clean rooms, king beds, reasonable rates."

The motel manager and firefighters rescued a Wichita man in his mid-50s after someone set a mattress on fire and handcuffed him to a toilet, Fire Marshal Ed Bricknell said.

After the man yelled for help, the manager extinguished the mattress, and firefighters cut off the metal handcuffs to free the man.

The man, who suffered slight smoke inhalation, has been treated at a hospital and released.

The motive remained a mystery.

Authorities were interviewing the victim, Bricknell said.

The fire, being investigated as aggravated arson, caused about $1,100 in damage to the Pawnee Inn, 532 E. Pawnee Ave., Bricknell said. So far, no one has been arrested.

The fire, confined to the mattress, spewed thick, toxic smoke from the burning foam. Fifteen people evacuated their rooms, said manager and owner Babu Patel.

For Patel, the emergency started around 1:30 a.m. when an alarmed woman came to him shouting: "There's a fire! There's a fire!"

She called 911. He hurried to Room 207, where he emptied three extinguishers into the room, where the brand-new mattress burned.

With the smoke, he said, "I could see nothing."

Meanwhile, the occupant kept screaming: "Help me! Help me!"

Firefighters found the man lying on the bathroom floor, handcuffed to the toilet. A pile of clothes lay nearby.

"Fortunately," Bricknell said, "someone heard him yell, and the smoke detector went off."
