Pope John Paul II dies at 84

John Paul II, whose 26-year reign as the charismatic leader of the world's 1 billion Roman Catholics was highlighted by visits to 129 countries, died Saturday. He was 84.

"The Holy Father is deceased this evening at 9:37 in his private apartment," Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said in a written statement.

It's strange, even while he was alive, I didn't hear much about him, and I'm catholic...

But yeah, he did seem like a very nice guy.

Wonder who the new pope will be?

regarding his world travels, I saw a neat political cartoon this morning that showed the pope's foot prints all over a globe, then the footprints when up into the clouds.

well his hey day was from the 60s to the 80s, thats when he made major reforms in the church such as not allowing cardinals under 85 to vote for the pope, and not allowing a person over 85 to be elected to the popalcy. and many other changes to the traditional church.

and just a quick side note, nuns don't have to wear the black and white penguine outfits any more (not for a while now actually) so if you see nuns in black and white in a movie now you know its crud.

I remember when his election was made and how controversial it was – being non-Italian and from an eastern-block country. He did seem to be very interested in spreading the concept of a fundamental brotherhood of man. I don’t agree with most of his views but on that most basic of issues, I think he did us all a great service. Now if we’d only listen!

Now a question for the devout; if the Pope is the earthly connection between man and God, how is it that he’s chosen by mere men? How can you be sure that God will answer the call from whomever the College of Cardinals pick? And more importantly, how would you know if God refused?

It's a valid question, one I think I know the answer to, but you might want to start it in another thread. I think this one should be kept as an obituary rather than a thological debate about the validity of the popacy.
