The Greats are Fading Away
every month the greats of our time fad off one by one
Pope John Paul II Johny Carson Rick James ( not much of a role modle but man could he make music) Ray Charles Barry White Marlin Brando the begining of this century marks an end to the greats of the past, and I just hope we can share the accomplishments of these legends with the next generation to come, and that we will not leve them with icons such as britney spears, madona, insink, and rappers like Lil John, Ja Rule, and 50 cent who have forgotten what rapps really about. The only talent that I see coming out of this generation is in the movie business, the music sux, the poloticians suck and the role modles in general suck. I myself barely caught the generation before this one, we had people we could look up to but they all seem to be dieing of and I worry who these kids are gona fall back on. with athism and political christianity on the rise, kids to day have no moral cumpass and are entering an unknown. who do little girls have look up to these days? britney and Paris Hilton? I actualy herd some one call here a role modle and it scared me. |

I agree about the lack of role models...although I wouldn't call rick james or barry white role models (and there will be a new pope when this one passes).
but as for music...I think there are lots of good bands coming out. There is a station here in k-town that plays local bands (some that are quickly becoming famous). Although this isn't rap, its more along the lines of rock. True you won't find any music like rick james or ray charles, or barry white, but that is because the taste of the youth has changed and its no longer under the demand it was way back when. As they say 'the times they are a changin' and as they change so will role models, and entertainment in general

I like rock, some people try and play rock and rap as opposites but they have alot of things in common. they both started with young people trying to make a statement about how jacked up things were. and like how alot of good rock band are under ground, most of th best rap right now is under ground. and I got a cousin whose in a band thats up and coming, it's called anti-flag. |

he's the lead singer, I forget his stage name, but his real name is justin geever. From what I hear their one of the only true punk bands around, they don't sell out their lyrics, they actualy are saying something instead of just screaming the same crap. or that's what I hear.

we are seeing the death of the media generation and seeing the ushering of the paranoia generation, where we are begining to need security for all the inventions we have made, we need ways to govern them or all will be lost...

LW, what does that have to do with anything posted here? Eeeshh.
Anyway, I too was a Barry White fan. And if it weren't birth control...well nevermind. I agree that the role models today are shot to sh**. I remember a time when most people actually respected the president & the office that he stood for. Looking back at old clips of presidents it was easy to see why. Now after Senior, BillyBob, & Dubya it seems impossible to look to politicians for inspirations. Sports stars are a bust. With the possible exception of Tiger Woods I can't think of any sports celeb worth looking up to. Music has pretty much gone to hell too. How long before we have another group that could capture the essence of the times like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix etc. I agree with ya 40s, all the people who said something worth listening to are dying out. Now what we're left with is people who want to grind all night, slap their hoes around & score some dope.. People we are raising a generation of morons!

lebro jmes has had a good attutiude so far too, I hope he keeps it up. there used to be no need for underground now it's the only have for good music, weather it's rap or rock the best is underground and it's sad that it has to be this way.

Charles Barkley said that atheletes should not be role models. I am not basketball guy at all, but LeBron is playing very well, and not doing anything dumb off the court. I actually watched my first NBA game in 9 years last night.
People come and go, and we'll probably never hear some of the "great ones".

I've never been much of a sports person (beyond obscure 'sports' such as martial arts & fencing/budo), but I can think of a few people with qualities worth admiring. Lance Armstrong for instance. I think most of the people worth admiring in sports are involved in the lower exposure/low profile sports. The big money/high exposure sports seems to bring out the a**h*** in people.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar I consider part of the old school. Didn't he retire roundabouts 89? What I know about him (which isn't much admittedly) I do respect. He sounded like somebody that worked hard for what he got, and wasn't a b*** for the highest bidder.

I was in jr. HS when Lew Alcindor was at UCLA. (He changed his name to K-A-J while there). My best freind Chuck was a ball boy for the Bruins and the Chancellor's son was a classmate. We used to sneek into closed practices to watch. Once, Chuck had to climb to the top of the backboard and line up a roll of quarters. Lewis (as Coach Wooden calls him to this day) had to jump and grab each of the 40 quarters. Amazing...
I heard he was coaching basketball on an Indian reservation in AZ - honing his skills and helping at the same time. Here's the alltime leading scorer in NBA history, a 3X NCAA champion, MVP - out of the spotlight - not driving a pimped-out Hummer - doing something good. So, yes I think he's someone to admire and hold up as a model for others.

What's wrong with a pimped out hummer? I think we would all go a little crazy with that kinda money rolling in. Some people mod cases some raise their cars, and some trick them out.
I hear their black balling him from becoming an NBA coach.
