Yep, just wondering if any of you guys were into the "computer arts"
Im currently a student learning 3D and I'm hopeing to get fulltime work someday, but I also just enjoy the CG community in general. Heres some sites if anyones curious, just a disclaimer if anyone decides to make an account, these a professional sites with serious artists. This is a nifty little forum where Im the Organics section Mod (you can check out some of my work too) www.lwg3d.com And also www.cgtalk.com This is a VERY hardcore Pro site, I URGE you to check out the CG CHOICE GALLERY, some of the cg there is better then anything you've probably ever seen in a movie. Heres a great example of the "standard" of work that goes around there. This image is copyrighted to the respected artist, and is hosted by CGNetworks.com. Check em out

Heh, well you could get into a big war about the best program (and trust me there have been) Kind of like the consoles... theres 3 main major apps, 3D Studio Max, Maya and Lightwave 3D. If the artist is talented however it doesnt make a diference what app they use.
I personally use Lightwave, and its the best app for anyone that wants to learn or get into 3D www.lightwave3d.com . But most movies always have their finalized CG go through Maya. Maya is basically the choice of a hollywood professional, but it has a really steep learning curve and isnt too user friendly. It also costs 5grand so...

I didn't even notice it was a cgi until I rad the post and then noticed he eye brows and hair
you can barely tell but play video games long enough and you can see it a little better, it annoys my older sister when I point out cgi in movies. she can't notice some untill I point it out. |

Sure thing,
Zbrush...Zbrush is this pretty revolutionary new app/tool that everyones using (even me ) http://pixologic.com/home/home.shtml Zbrush is like CG but for "real" artists... its basically a sculpting program, and unless you know how to sculpt you're gonna suck at this program. Its one of those things people can show you how they do it.. but unless you got artistic skills you're gonna suck. heres some 3d artists sites.. http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/ http://www.designpicture.com/ (AWESOME ARTIST) http://www.optidigit.com/stevens/ http://www.meshweaver.com (a guy I know)

your tee hee's remind me of that episode of Family guy withe the guy with long arms tickling a midget. THe best CGI ive seen so far that comes close to that picture is Final Fantasy. Those peeps at squarenix are also producing FF:Advent Childern. There Videos look exactly like the pics shown here.

Heh, well according to the team behind the unreal engine... they estimate that within 10-15 years if the technology keeps progressing at the rate its going we shoud have systems around that will handle realtime graphics such as that. What you dont realise is, to make a SINGLE frame of CG such as those you see in the Choice gallery (or basically anything that looks "neat") even on top systems now it takes about 3-4 hours just to compute. Companys such as ILM and dreamworks have WAREHOUSES of state of the art systems built PURELY for power.. its fed into a render farm and the animators in ILM, Dreamworks have workstations with speed equal to approxiametly 100GHZ. Games look "crap" compared to CG because a game has to calculate all the 3d and geometry in fractions of a second, which means theres usually only a few million polygons on screen per frame, and textures are usually pretty basic, and also with games... there still is no "real world lighting" ..ie Raytracing technology.
A single frame of CG takes several hours to compute... it uses raytracing, usually thousands of millions of polygons... sophisticated multilayerd textures of sizes about 8000x8000 (i believe the golem texture they ised in LOTR was 24k by 24k) and loads of real world lighting and camera properties. But hey, the time will come soon enougth Heh even know in CG we've yet to see a genuinely "photo realistic" human, this is because skin is more then just a plasticy matt surface... its pretty complex and is kinda translucent... look at the FF:spirits within movie... their skin is blatantly CG. Theres this plugin shader I want to buy for my CG called G2 and it uses sub surface scattering..lookie http://www.worley.com/G2/g2_gallery.html#
