Note wrote in French
I have a letter hand written in French and I can only read English, I know I could use the goggle translator but as it is hand written I don't know what some of the symbols are. It is about one of my racing pigeons that has got lost in France and I would like it back as it is a rather good one, I could send it as a attachment and it is not very long. I am in the UK.

Re: Note wrote in French
I don't know much more French than the standard 4-letter words, but I'm amazed how well my translation matched to FanEAW's!

Re: Note wrote in French
Thanks FanEaw I think he is wanting to keep it and asking me to transfer the birds registration etc. to him. I think if he let go it would come back as his town is not far from the English channel. Problem is I would like it back but I will have to workout what I am to do. As for the persons who replied taking the piss I don't suppose they would know of the many lives saved during the war because of the pigeons homing ability and the humble pigeon was the most decorated of all animals for services done, yes they did get medals same as other animals used in the war so take the piss out of that. The racing pigeon also is nothing like the dirty street feral pigeon.

Re: Note wrote in French
Hey Ex-para
Sorry if you took offence - I was not taking the 'p' - Just my warped sense of humour - I am fully aware of the pigeons war time exploits....Also read my sig & you will see my support... I can understand how frustrated it can be not getting it back... My understanding is that a homing bird has an organ that is sensitive to magnetic flux and that it uses that as one of the primary ways of navigation back to 'Home'. Its loft, wherever that may be. It is also my understanding that if the bird is kept 'captive' in a loft at a different home loft for any substantial time, its magnetic imprint is replaced by the new location. My question is: how come it got lost in the first place? The next bit is fact, not taking the 'p'... Pigeons are a very good eating. There are many breeders, especially in Brittany area supplying them to the supermarkets. I have visited a 'Pigeon Farm' there. I too love that type of bird and have several pet doves that fly free and feed from my hand but that doesn't stop me from eating pigeons. They ARE very tasty especially when served with a fine French red wine. One of my Doves: 'Bonny'

Re: Note wrote in French
BTW: you are correct that he may want to keep it: Colombophile = Pigeon Fancier. He is saying would it be possible to....
Mail him and say that it is not possible, please send him back (or let it free to find its own way home... Unless there is a risk of it getting lost again or ending up on a French dining table!)

Re: Note wrote in French
The letter I sent to the forum was the second one, the first one was translated to me by a brides maid at a wedding I was attending but who has now returned to the middle east where she works and in that first letter it was stated that the bird had an injury (broken Leg) but the wings where not affected so it was not really lost.
Your Somerset humour is not like the Gordie humour so does not go down well as I think you are still taking the piss and that is an end of it. |

Re: Note wrote in French
Pigeons are lovely, for my own personnal experiences, i used to own one, but sadly it died.
i had a beatiful White pigeon, I was used to letting him go free outdoor and he came back to eat and then got back out, for sleeping he was usually sleeping in his cage, one day he came back with a letter strapped to his saying, a bloody letter, someone wrote on the letter (wich was bloody) to help to whoever received the letter, he had a car accident and he mentioned where exactly on wich road he was, so i called 9-1-1. |

I was born only 15 miles from N-u-T - I can claim to be a Gordie (just) Yes, I did have my tongue in cheek when I posted it but I was not taking the 'p' as you put it. It is a fact, they are tasty as are many other creatures that some folk keep as pets. It is a fact, as you surely must know, many fancier's birds are shot especially in France - many do end up on the table. That is reality.

Re: Note wrote in French
My apologies Ex-Para, like Donald, I wasn't taking the 'P' at your post or hobby. Hailing from N Yorkshire (Dales), I fully understand the appreciation for these respectable birds and the value of them, both the cost now and their part in history.
Again, my apologies to you, no way did I intend any offence.
