Re: Nasa Pictures Archive

Just click on the picture, it'll then be by itself in a browser. Right click on that picture and select "set as background", that'll put it on your desktop as the wallpaper. The actual picture size is 900x600 which is a 4:3 resolution. If you stretch it to fill the screen it'll distort, somewhat, if you have a widescreen monitor. You can center the picture instead and use whatever clour you want for the border. The stretch and center is in the desktop properties, just right click on a blank area of the desktop.

Look at that. Of all of those lights, less than a half dozen are individual stars. All the rest are galaxies. GALAXIES. Hundreds of them. And this is less than one tenth of one percent of our sky.

The universe expands itself at nearly 1.332 times the speed of light, making it to day approximately around 12.33 x 10^(44000) lightspeed. and creating around 10 galaxies every year and around 120 000 stars every month.

Re: Nasa Pictures Archive

FanEAW. How can they know the universe is expanding if we don't even know how big the universe is or where it ends? I could never understand that.

Re: Nasa Pictures Archive

The universe isn't expanding; the space between objects is growing.

Imagine you're on the surface of a balloon, and you're two dimensional. Kinda like flatland, only the whole thing is spherical. You can only see front, back, left and right, but not up off the surface of the balloon, or down into it.

Now imagine that the balloon is covered with hundreds of little dots. Now someone starts blowing air into the balloon. What do you see?

You see every dot start moving away from you. And if you're observant you'll notice that the dots farthest away are moving away faster than those that are close by.

Pick one of the dots and teleport to it. What do you see? The same exact thing. Even dots that seemed to be heading in this direction when you were in the other place appear to be heading away from you.

Everything is moving away from everything else, and this is what scientists mean by "expansion". We know that other galaxies are moving away because of red shift, aka the doppler effect. When something is moving away from you the light's wavelength gets "stretched" and so moves farther down the spectrum; towards the red. The faster something is moving away the more red it appears. And scientists have found that the farther away a galaxy is, the more red shifted it appears. So everything is moving away from everything else; like on the balloon.

What I meant to say was,

I wish someone I knew or I was good with photoshop and could enhance the photo. Make it look clearer, and a higher definition.

I knew that you could just set it as your background, but it would be all distorted and the likes.

Unfortunately, 'Photobucket' won't allow larger pictures, but if you want it for a widescreen monitor (1440x900), this might do it - It might appear a bit pixelated, but it isn't distorted....
