Do you put margerine/butter on your bagels and sandwiches?

I am having a friendly arguement about this. I put margerine on my sandwiches and begals. She says that is gross and normal people only put butter or margerine on their bagel if that is the only topping and never on sandwiches.

What do you do?

Re: Do you put margerine/butter on your bagels and sandwiches?

Although I enjoy a chunk of 'dry' bread (fresh and crusty with no butter or anything), a sandwich MUST have butter thick enough to see my teeth-marks when I bite into it

The only use I have for margarine, is as a hand-cleaner, after doing dirty greasy jobs on my car - The cheap cr@ppy stuff is great for breaking grease/oil down, to wash off with soap and hot water, all those emulsifiers finally have a good use

Re: Do you put margerine/butter on your bagels and sandwiches?

I hate margarine, it tastes nasty and is chock-full of nasty chemicals. If I'm going to die from what I eat, I'd rather die from a heart attack because of eating too much rich cream butter than from cancer caused by the chemicals in margarine.

That aside, with bagels it's hit or miss for me. Sometimes I want butter, sometimes not. With sandwiches I'll usually use butter, unless I use mayo.

If I don't use cream cheese I drown my bagels and muffins in butter,

I like honey/butter/cream cheese on my bagels, I hate margerine. With sandwiches, it depends which.

That could make a good bumper-sticker.... 'Margarine eaters do it with emulsifiers'

There's no chemicals in margarine, it's made out of oils, many oils, thats it.

Now as for the question, I put some butter or margarine (whatever is available) on some bread, toast it and make sure it's melted right into the bread (or bagel) and then I might but some jam on it.

Sniper, everything's made of chemicals. There's nothing wrong with synthetics, either. However, the fear is that there might be some unknown, undiscovered health effects from synthetic materials. That problem is downplayed significantly in "natural" products.

That being said, I far prefer butter to margarine.

I have never used either on sandwiches. Bagels/toast, yes, either one.

sniper is right margarine is made with mostly oils and fat, of course there is a bit of chemicals but not much.

thats why its efficient at breaking grease particles.

whats wrong with loving margarine, if you look at Becel theyre of excelletn quality, and non-hydregenated. for me its margarine, because its soft, and yummy. of course butter i like too but ill take margarine before. XD

Re: Do you put margerine/butter on your bagels and sandwiches?

I refuse to answer your poll and the grounds of it being stupid and had too little choices.

Aside from that some of the better margerines like the ones from olive oil or mono unsaturated fats which is to say they don't add hydrogen to make margine stay together and make it into a bad chemical are a lot better than a lot of other brands.

I love butter though. Its really nice to cook with.

EVERYTHING in the world is made of chemicals. We all are. The foods we eat are. The plants that grow are. It's just that public perception has narrowed the definition of "chemical" to only synthetic, often harmful products.

I like butter because of its rich taste. I can stand margarine if I have to, but it just isn't the same. Kind of like diet soda vs regular soda, I guess.

Don't waste the time to put it on sammich or toast...eat butter straight from the butter dish.

Re: Do you put margerine/butter on your bagels and sandwiches?

The thing with margarine is that most of the time it's full of preservative. Now, I'm not one of those nuts who goes into a fit whenever they see a preservative in the ingredient list... But given a choice between something with a lot of sulfur-based preservative, and something without, I'll take the one without. I get regular unsalted butter, no preservatives if possible.
