Tin foil crew

Ok, for all those going around with tin foil on their heads to protect themselves from aliens/governments/etc... What is it about the tin foil that protects yourself? Do you think after all these years they would have figured a way around it?

I always thought tinfoil was used to gain better reception for your internet, tv, radio, etc., I didn't know it could be used to.. keep away extraterrestrial aliens.
