Free stuff!

Now I've got your attention , I want you to list all of your favourite free programs and explain why. (NO TRIALS!!!)

I'll start you off:

MyDefrag: Orders files by their directories, drastically speeded up my PC.

SUPER: Convert pretty much any video or audio format.

XBMC: Media Centre that can be run from an OS or a LiveCD, great for watching vids without Windows working in the background.

Re: Free stuff!

Ubuntu 9.04: It isn't technically a program, but it's great. It can boot off the CD, has a bunch of utilites like gparted included and has memtest86+ on there as well.

Rivatuner: Good tool for adjusting graphics card fan speed, monitoring GPU temperature, and overclocking (if you're into that).

Coretemp: Excellent tool for monitoring CPU temperatures.

Pidgin: A single IM client that can interface with AIM, MSN, IRC, Gmail chat, Yahoo chat, and a bunch of other stuff I've never heard of. It's great.

Firefox: Better stability than IE with fewer security holes, plus it's less of a resource hog? And it isn't from Microsoft? Sold.

Re: Free stuff!

Firefox indeed.
Revo uninstaller(uninstalls and removes everything)
xfire: comes with screenshots, in game chat, voice video etc.
avast: good free AV
spybot: good free antispyware
comodo:confusing but a decent free firewall
There is others but I can't figure it out.
Pidgin, I might have to get that.

Re: Free stuff!

PSI (Personal Software Inspector) checks your computer to see that all your software is fully patched and you are not left vulnerable as a result. I thought all my programs were up to date but I was wrong it found a couple that needed updating and it has let me know since when updates are available.

I really like the Super program, but their website needs work... It's practically a maze to find the download link!

Re: Free stuff!

GPU-Z Allows you to check graphics card temps and saves the video card bios
Nibitor - You can edit the bios on Nvidia cards so they can be overclocked. You had better be prepared and check with Rivatuner if the overclock is stable first though.
Rivatuner Allows you to mod a lot of things on the video card and works very well for a monitoring tool too.
PCwizard2009 - good monitoring tool
CPU-Z - Allows to find the specs on a computer easily
Imgburn - Good for burning disks
VLCPlayer - Good video Player nad plays all the formats just fine
Folding@home - Helping to cure cancer with your video card or CPU
WIndows Enabler - YOu can check grayed out boxes and is good with HP Drive Key Boot Utility
HP Drive Key Boot Utility - allowed me to make a Flash drive easily into a bootable drive with Windows enabler
EVGA Precision - Like Rivatuner only less options and simpler to use
Coretemp - Works with a huge range of CPU's to check their temps

I agree with that, I keep the installer on my memory stick so I don't have to keep trying to find it.

For anyone interested, the download link for SUPER is at the bottom of this page: http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html

A few more of mine:
MS Security Essentials: Solid AV that doesn't use many resources.
GIMP: Basically a free version of Photoshop.
Glary Utilities: Keep your drive clean and get rid of spyware, cookies, temp files etc.
And one of the best has to be OpenOffice.org: MS Office but free! And loads of useful add-ons available.

Firefox- of course
VLC Media Player- another given
Camstudio- screen recorder
Pixie- tells the exact color of the pixel your mouse pointer is pointing at, and lets you copy HTML code.
Free File Splitter- as its name implies
DOSBox

Opera - Only browser I ever use now. Used to use Firefox a fair bit too, but the last version I used had massive memory leaks.

Oh and I second VLC media player. :D I still haven't found a file type it won't play.

I've heard Media Player Classic Home Cinema is great too, but it requires tons of tweaking to get things to play right and I don't know most of the things.

Re: Free stuff!

Or get K-Lite Codec Pack Full and watch 'em all in WMP No need to have another media player installed

I got fed up of the annoying cone icon with VLC, I know I could change it but...you know how it is....something else I would never get done

It is good, I am running it now since I just did a recent format. Heck, anything is better than mcafee.

Gamecam is good for recording games. If you use the free version you get a annoying icon in the top left or right of the recording.

I'll second that, and add Norton

Have you updated to 9.0?

Undervolting? I've heard of overclocking, thats a new one to me.

Your CPU is 30 degrees cooler? If mine went 30 degrees cooler, it'd be running at about 5C

Re: Free stuff!

Well, 15 I said 30 cause I was very happy. Yeah I read a guide on it, you reduce the electricity to the cpu and the battery lasts longer and the cpu supposedly lasts longer too. My brother does it on his laptop and has been for a year and has never noticed a problem.
