7-zip can unzip anything I've run across so far, including .rar. Also no constant update checks or background processes, as far as I'm aware.


Actually, no, I was thinking of .tar. .rar is proprietary, so I don't know what supports it or not.

Yep, 7Zip unzips rars and tarballs(which it can also zip up)...

If you want something that goes that little bit further, i've used ExtractNow for a number of years, basically the benefits of unzipping with extractnow are that it can also dump disk images... It doesn't compress anything though so i'm not sure whether it'll suite what you're looking for.
