Feeling old

Hi all:

Well, before tonight, I did not consider my self "old", now I do, I just filed for Social Security, on line (USA folks).

Anybody, in the USA of age, the on line is not hard to do.

Re: Feeling old

Hey BG

You're lucky to be able to file at such a young age!! The government keeps raising the age for eligibility and I think I have to wait an extra 3yrs to apply. If I remember correctly, my kids will have to wait an extra 8yrs.... could be only 5 but the age requirement keeps getting bumped up.

Maybe you get some credit for the dangers of childhood??

Which of these do you NOT remember?:

Playing with Mercury.... rubbing it on a dime to make it shine like new.
The city fogging for mosquitoes with DDT.
Watch/clock dials that glowed in the dark with the use of Radium.
Having the fit of new shoes checked by sticking your feet in a flouroscope.

Just looking back.... like we did yesterday when we met for the first time face-to-face. Finally meeting you was a great pleasure and I enjoyed the conversation.

Re: Feeling old

I wasn't feeling old until about 6 weeks ago when I decided that, rather than do the 2 mile walk to work that I do every day I would use my daughters "forgotten" mountain bike to do the journey .. I'm sure my muscles never ached this much 40 years ago & more when I used to think nothing of a Sunday trip of 100 miles and more ..

Good news is that it now takes me 15 minutes on the bike to do the 35 minute walk .. unfortunately most of it is uphill.

Re: Feeling old

I'm willing to bet that it is uphill both ways!! Haven't been on a bike for over 20yrs.... before bikes were cool. I was relieved of my 10spd when the kids took it to go fishing back in '87 0r '88..... the ex's still hangs in the garage. Matching bikes with child carriers to take the little ones with you.... as their ages progressed they had their own bike and the wee ones rode with mom or dad. We made quite the procession way before biking was considered "in".

A bike ride is the best way to take in the scenery and I bet GF has great options.

Re: Feeling old

When I was young ... we were lucky to have a 5 speed .. my daughters bike has 18 .. but something went wrong with the front changer so I have removed it and left myself with the largest gear and 5 speeds

The back news is that Mrs D_F DOES NOT ride .. I tried to teach her back 1980 when we were living in Holland, not far from Amsterdam, but it was a lost cause .. trying to get her to ride here would be a miracle .. but at least I also manage to pop out for chores on it as well. I want to start riding around with my camera and take pictures too .. It's in my blood, Mum and Dad were keen bikers and I was too until I was old enough for a mechanised version ..

Re: Feeling old

I would ride a bike, if there was any thing worth seeing. Trust me Columbus Ohio is boring. There are no relics, like Greece, except the one in the mirror

Re: Feeling old

funny thing is that it's probably boring to you .. you've got used to it .. but to others who have never seen it .. it may be quite interesting .. of course if you have sold yourself the idea that it's boring you'll have to find something to awaken your interest first .. at least film is cheap when you go digital;

Re: Feeling old

There are some sights in central Ohio but finding anything of interest can prove frustrating. Some of the old theaters are worth peeking at as well as the statehouse. Most historical buildings have been razed and replaced with newer structures. The Neil House and Union Station have been gone for years. Sometimes they don't even wait for a building to get old... City Center lasted about 20yrs and has been slated for demolition.

Have I gotten off topic, or what?? Sorry.

As Red Green said, "I don't like getting old but it's better than the alternative".

Red Green was/is a comedy show from Canada... funny program. PBS no longer carries the series..... cancelled after MANY seasons.

Re: Feeling old

Hi BG I turned 62 a week ago and today I picked up a trailer load of aged horse manure for the garden (no pun intended ) the lady with the horses gave me such a good load that I had to go around the sides and pat it firm with a shovel so that it would stay on board. Well when I got home and after I unloaded it I felt old too

Re: Feeling old

Are you trying to say that as you get older you sink deeper into the manure or that the deeper you sink into the manure the older you feel ???

Re: Feeling old

I don't have to travel to get my manure, the wife tells just about everyday that I am full it.
